Pump connectors larger than existing pipe of pool pump

I recently bought a new replacement pump. The intake and output happen to be 2 inches. The existing pipe is 1.5 inches. I added reducers and hooked it up. I am just opening up the pool - the basket doesn't seem to stay full enough to pump the water and seems like it is making the pump overheat. The cord gets hot and it smells like something is burning. Could the reducers cause this problem or is something else going on? I have replaced my pool pumps before with not problem but never had to use a reducer.

It’s not the reducers. Most new pumps come configured for 240 volts. I suspect that your new pump is configured for 240 volts but receiving only 120 volts.
What is your supply voltage to the pump?
What voltage is the pump configured for?
