    Chlorine levels seem wrong

We are opening our pool. We had it almost perfect with perfect readings. Overnight it turned solid green. I have tried slamming it and got my free chlorine levels too high. My free chlorine is reading 26. My combined chloramines is reading zero. My TC is 26. The CYA is 40, my pH was nine but I have added my muriatic acid. I feel like something is wrong. Any suggestions?

    Re: Chlorine levels seem wrong

How can you get a pH of 9? But, when the FC > 10ppm you can not get a good reading from the pH test anyway.

Is the water cloudy green or clear green?

My pH color was much brighter than my top reading so I guessed at nine. Solid green. And I cannot see the bottom of the pool

If your pool turned solid green overnight, that sort of describes iron in your pool water. Are you filling from a well?

I did not think iron would obscure being able to see the bottom.

Sounds like you just need to follow the ShockLevelAndMAINTAIN Process.

You're right, jblizzle. The fact that it apparently "turned" overnight leads me to suspect iron. we'll see what reply we get.

No well water. City water but we have had rain. Maybe 2-3 inches. The color has not gotten any better throughout the day and we started with the chlorine first thing this morning

If you are on city water then iron was probably not a good guess. I suggest you continue the SLAM procedure by following it VERY carefully from the article. It should look better tomorrow.

I still have a very green pool and my numbers are still near perfect. My slam level is 16 and I'm staying between 15 and 16 even overnight with a lot of sunshine during the day today. My CYA is 40 and my pH is 7.0. What else could be causing a green pool?

Do you add any flocculant, algaecide, or anything else to your pool during opening?

No. I only have used liquid chlorine, muratic acid, baking soda, and stabilizer.

I have tried very hard to put a picture on here but it seems impossible.

The fact I can't upload a picture to a website is probably a good indication that I do not need to be trying to figure out how to handle chemicals in a swimming pool

That does not look clear green (like from metal), that looks like a swamp.

    Re: Chlorine levels seem wrong

Shouldn't be from metal. I'm so frustrated because I'm slamming the pool and it is not changing. FC is holding steady at 16 with CC at 1. CYA is 40 and PH is 7.0. Why isn't it changing??

Was it green at all when you took the cover off? How long was there between the time you took the cover off and added the chlorine?

How is your pump behaving? Is the pressure going up? (Have you back washed if the pressure went up 25% over the clean pressure?)
