Cut main drain line, will water shoot out?

I want to reconfigure the piping to my in ground pool. Right now the pool is closed. I blew out the line to the drain and then closed the valve to the drain line between the pump and where it comes out of the ground. If I were to cut that line before the valve, essentially removing the valve, will all my pool water come shooting out of that pipe, or since the the pool is in the ground and the pipe is above ground will it stay in the pool?
If I can't just cut that line without flooding my backyard, is there a way to do this?

Water will seek its own level. As long as you cut the pipe above the level in the pool, the water will stay in the pool.
