I am putting up a new above ground 18X48, I am using city water to fill it, what should I do first? I was going to buy a start up kit, is that a good idea?
Hi Marie! First thing ... the right test kit. See the TF-100 link in my sig below. EVERYTHING you do to that water hinges on YOUR testing. Don't fall for test strips or pool store testing. Next, read the TFP Pool School pages. It doesn't take long but you need to know it. Once the water is full, you can expect to do the following:
1 - Start soaking stabilizer (CYA) for an initial target of 30 ppm
2 - Add regular bleach for a day 1 target of about 3 ppm; once the stabilizer from step 1 dissolves, increase to about 4-5 ppm
3 - Test and adjust pH to the mid 7s.
That's a very basic start. But once you get the right test kit you can post a full set of numbers for additional details. Hope that helps. Welcome!
