Problem With Pump When Using Timer

We inherited our pool ten years ago. The equipment pad is elevated on an incline 15 ft. from the pool. The first year trying to use the timer the pump didn’t want to prime on its own. So, I’ve always just ran it 24/7. This year I decided to become more of a conservationist and use the timer for more realistic run times. The pump still has the priming problem. An obvious problem is the pump basket doesn’t remain full when the pump is turned off. The lid gasket seems to be in good shape. Is this problem caused or exacerbated by the equipment pad having elevation relative to the pool?

You could add a check valve prior to the pump so it will retain enough water to prime instead of running back to the pool.

Also hunt down any small leaks you may have anywhere to slow water running back.
