Cloudy water/high cya

Hello,

We recently purchased a home w an inground pool, roughly 30k gallons vinyl liner. It hadn't been
Opened in yrs so opening it has been an experience. We have been shocking, scrubbing, cleaning, back washing for 2 weeks. Now the pool is cleaner, but water very cloudy, can only see about a foot down. I just tested the levels w TAylor test kit and we found that the free chlorine was high(38), but the cya was also very high (90). Any idea how to lower cya, w out draining, so chlorine can start working. The rest of the results are:

Fc: 38
Cc: 1.0
Ph 7.0
Alkalinity 120
Cya 90

Any help is much appreciated.

The only way to lower the CYA is by replacing water. Looks like you could use about a 50% change (or 2 33% changes to be safer).

You need to follow the ShockLevelAndMAINTAIN Process if you had not previously found that procedure. It is possible with the high CYA, but you need to maintain the FC level at 35ppm at all times ... according to the FC/CYA Chart (so you are actually there already).

Lowering the CYA will not let the "chlorine start working". If you lowered the CYA, you would also need to lower the FC and the "cleaning power" would be the same.

What kind of filter do you have?

We have a sand filter. So really, only way to do it is replace water? Is that an easy process?

Easy process? Compared to sending a satellite to space, yes. Compared to making a PB&J sandwich, no.

If you have a waste function on your filter valve and can isolate your floor drain, you could just pump the water right out of the pool. Or if you have land sloping away from the pool, you could siphon it out. IF neither, then you could rent or buy a submersible pump.

Just leave at least 1 foot of water in the shallow end or you could run into problems with ground water or liner shrinkage.
