Advice about pump change

Our pool builder put in a 5hp Hayward TriStar pump which was too loud and too big to preform corectly. It was switched out to a 3hp Hayward EcoStar variable speed pump, which seemed to us to be working corectly. The pool builder has acted unethically in several instances, so now I feel I need to check everything he does. Two weeks after the pump was changed out the plumber showed up and told us he was told to change the computer (brain) that controls pump. He seemed to be confused as to why he was changing it, he was given an open taped up box by the pool contractor, which concerned him.
Are there different computers necessary for these pumps or is something odd going on here?

Sounds weird to me ... seems like you should talk to the builder to find out what he is doing.

The builder is causing all of the problems, he will not answer truthfully. Do you know if the pumps use different computers to control them?

Not as far as I know.

The 3hp VS pump has its own built in timer/controller. More here, EcoStar | Pumps | In Ground Pool Pumps - Hayward Pool Products

There is also pool automation that the pump(s) could be connected to but you don't list any pool automation in your signature, like prologic or omnilogic. Either pump could be connected to any Hayward pool automation system.
