Threaded Fittings Question

I am currently working on hard plumbing my pool. I have a couple of threaded fittings coming from the filter that is attached by a union. How much should we tighten them? Do we need to go to the effort to use two pie wrenches to get them tight or is hand tight good. I should also mention that I am using pipe dope.

You shouldn't have to tighten them to the point you need two wrenches. They should be firm/snug, hand tight should be fine. Pipe dope might be good insurance, but other than that you should be fine. The good thing with the unions is that if you do notice a small drip, you can crank it down just a little more. You may also notice an O-ring on one end of the union. A tiny bit of lube in that ring is recommended if you still have it apart.
