Balboa Control Panel Filter Cycles

I new to this particular spa with a Balboa control panel and I want to be clear on what exactly the various filter cycles mean for my spa.
The options seem to be F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7 or F8.

I think that the numbers represent hours but I am unclear as to whether F2 for example means the filter cycle jets will turn on (and heat if needed) every two hours OR if F2 means that the filter cycle will remain on for 2 hour durations (but how often it will activate, I'm not sure)? I think I read that F8 means that the filter cycle jets will always remain on, but I'm not sure what the 8 represents.

Can someone please explain the gist of these settings? What are the reasons someone would use a F2 vs F7 for example?

On my tub it is the number of hours it runs to filter. It is in a 12 hour period for me. I have it set for 1 hour and my tub stays clean. The only reason I can think to run it longer is if it isn't clean and needs more filter time.
