When I use my pool cleaner I can't shut off the main drain valve completely to allow strainer only without the pump shutting down with a drive error. If I turn it 1/2 way to close main it works but not near as good. It worked like a champ with my old Hayward pump that didn't have the suction entrapment feature. Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to TFP!!!Well, you have discovered one of the reason we typically do not recommend the SVR pumps for residential pools.
Sorry, I do not know what to suggest to improve your performance.
Maybe someone else will have an idea.
