What size sand filter , 40k gallon pool

Was pretty much dead set on a cartridge filter , but I really think I want the ease of a sand filter .
what size should I go with ? Thinking the Pentair 600lb with 2" plumbing .
Any other recommendations? Would like to stick with Pentair .

    BIG!!!

My little calculator that I use suggests a minimum of 36" diameter (not sure how much sand that is). You could get by with smaller and just have to backwash more often.

Go with a 36" SF no question. My Pentair holds about 925 pounds of sand.

I'll be the echo chamber here and say: "Yep! 36" sand filter would be a great size for your pool." Make sure you have room on your pad for it. I was going to go for a 36 inch when I replaced mine, but there wasn't room to sandwich it in between my heater and pump.

Ok , so I'm looking at the Pentair TR140c and the Pentair TR140c3
c3 says commercial , and has flanged fittings instead of threaded .
so I'm guessing these won't be overkill?? Will have to do some more checking to figure out what valve goes on the 140c3

They won't be overkill for a pool that large. You'll likely only have to backwash every 3 months, maybe not even that often if you consistently maintain good water chemistry and don't have a lot of dirt, pollen, etc. going in your pool.

You'll be happy with a side mounted valve set up. They're more reliable over the long term than a top mounted valve (like mine). It should come with a multiport valve (MPV), in either 1.5" fittings or 2" fittings. Get the option that matches your plumbing for the pool.

Looks like the 140c is the commercial version , and the 140 is the consumer .
The commercial is just a little harder to find , and a little more money

I've got the residential TR-140 and it has been bulletproof in my 42k pool.

Only 27K gallons here...with a filter that is bit smaller than I'd like (should have known better).

Wow!!! Is that YOUR pool or the neighborhood pool?
It is actually now my daughter's who lives there with spouse, a nine y/o and a five y/o.

It gets far more use now. They like big parties and the pool has been fun for us all.
