    PB says don't use Clorox!

Says it will raise salt levels and cause scale?

Re: PB says don't use Clorox!

    They all say that.

1 gallon of bleach (8.25%) in 10,000 gallons of water will raise the salt level by 14ppm. But....

32 oz (2 lbs or about four 8oz tabs) of trichlor will raise your salt by 18ppm in 10,000 gallons. And....

32oz (2 lbs) of dichlor will raise your salt by 11ppm. And....

128 oz of Muriatic acid (roughly 1 gallon of Hydrogen Chloride) will also raise your salt levels by approximately 20ppm.

So, as you can see, EVERY chlorinating product you put in your pool raises your salt levels (chlorine becomes chloride).

As for scale, hogwash! Bleach can temporarily raise your pH (if you put enormous quantities of it in the water all at once) but the pH rise is balanced by the acidic nature of chlorine oxidation reactions. So bleach is net neutral in terms of pH. There is small amount of excess lye in bleach (bleach is manufactured with a pH of ~12 to ensure that it remains stable) but the amount of excess lye is quite small. Calcium hardness, alkalinity and pH have more to do with scale than bleach.

The dreaded clorox again! Just tell him you'll use Walmart brand instead then! Joyfulnoise covered all the bases of that conversation.

I have learned to not say Clorox or bleach. Instead I say chlorine............yeah it is the same stuff but for some reason it is better received and causes less LOL

And if they ask you what type of chlorine, just say liquid chlorine.

High pH combined with high CH cause scale. But not salt. It has nothing to do with scaling at all.

salt actually lowers your CSI scale a small degree. negligible until you keep a couple thousand ppm in the pool, but still, if anything it helps against scaling.

As scaling potential reduction goes, you can get more of it by a pH reduction of 0.3-0.4 than you will from a typical level of Salt you'd have in a pool. It's very negligible indeed.

Re: PB says don't use Clorox!

Ask the pool builder what happens to pools that run really high salt levels for their chlorine generator, and how is that salt okay but the salt from bleach isn't. His response is sure to be nonsensical and comical.

The main reason pool stores and builders advise against Clorox is because you don't buy it from them. Funny thing is, every pool service truck I see -- and there are a lot in SoCal -- has the orange and yellow HASA crates in the bed. They might use pucks to maintain FC during the week when they aren't around, but when they visit, they use 12.5% bleach to boost the FC!

Troublefree does not mean Maintenancefree. It's like brushing your teeth: You can spend a couple minutes a day and pennies a week or go to the dentist once a year and spend several thousand dollars.
A pool is like a pet - you have to feed it every day, even the days you don't want to play with it!
