    Freeze protection shutting off

I've kept my pool open as cold winter continues. With these long spells of below freezing temps I noticed the pump would shut off, for about ten minutes, then back on for 30 -40 minutes then off 10 minutes, etc.

is this normal? It's fine with me, saves some power and still keeps pipes from freezing.

when it only gets below freezing for short times, couple hours at night then back up during the day, like most of the winter here in NC I shut power off completely so freeze protection doesn't even turn on, but this cold spell is suppose to last several days

    Thanks, Steve

Do you have an automation system on the pool?

Unless it gets extremely cold (arctic temperature range) your water will not freeze in the 10 minute time things are off.

No automation Paul - it's just the yellowish colored box with timer and temputure dial for freeze temp

Im not worried that pump shutting off for brief periods will cause problems, in fact I think it's a good thing as reduces power usage. This is my first winter with pool and just wondering if these freeze protection units are built to shut off that way
