Hayward NorthStar seal / motor question...

Hi folks - Would appreciate your savvy. (My first forum post - apologies if I have a duplicate!) My NS had a slow drip from the area around the vicinity of the seal plate. Worked and sounded fine otherwise. My pool guy (who I respect) said it was the shaft seal, and said I shouldn't bother replacing it - since once they start leaking, the motor's on borrowed time. The Hayward tech support guy said it was likely the diffuser o-ring, and I should replace the seal & rings at my leisure - which I did today or the fun of it. ;) The motor looked fine. Works fine again, and the leak is gone. Anyone have savvy on whether my pool guy was right? Thanks!!

It depends on how long it was leaking and if the bearings got wet. But if they were damaged, you should be able hear it. Hopefully, you got to it in time.
