To cover heat pump or not ?

I have a Hayward Heat Pro pool heater and I have read some people cover and some don't in the winter. I live in Ohio.

Hayward says to cover it after you drain it. Most regular heaters shouldn't be covered.

I cover my both my heaters and pump with a tarp but just the top not the sides. Keeps the snow and ice off but lets air flow so excess moisture stays away. Seems to work pretty well.
