Any pool owners in the Pacific Northwest?

I live just outside of Portland, OR and am planning on having a new gunite pool installed in 2016. I already had a site evaluation by the builder and I was surprised when he said that the construction could be done even while raining. If you aren't familiar with the climate here in the Pacific Northwest, it pretty much rains constantly (but not usually very hard) from October through May. I asked him if it would be possible to build the pool in March/April, which are the wettest months here, and he said it wouldn't be a problem.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has heard of building a pool while raining. Everything else I've ever heard or read says not to build a pool unless it has been dry for several days. The company I am talking with has been around for over 50 years and has a lot of knowledge, so I trust what the builder is saying, but it just goes against what others have told me.

Also, I am planning on getting an auto cover with my pool. The builder said I wouldn't need any additional winterization equipment if I did the auto cover. For those of you who live in rainy winter climates, is this correct?

Thanks in advance. Any other things I need to take into consideration for having a pool in a rainy climate?
 
HI! What fun to build a pool!

Rain during a build can do two things-------------REALLY mess up your yard. Think about trucks and stuff getting stuck and sliding and sinking down. Most builds have the home owner fixing the mess after the pool is done.

Once the hold is dug rain can cause cave ins. That can be overcome but it will be work and effort on the PB part.

We live in Eagle Point Oregon, by Medford. I would not start a dig when really rainy, like kimkats said you can have cave ins once the hole is dug, you are ok if the shotcrete is in but not the dirt hole. We had a really bad pb and when we talked to another after project was started as we thought the 1st guy would not be back after leaving for a while with just the dirt hole. He said it had to have the shotcrete in before the rain gets here or would cave in, so just be a ware of this a head of time. We do not close our pool for winter here. One good thing is to have freeze protection for your pump, so it will automatically come one during very cold weather, it works great. I also would not recommend quartz plaster unless you have a really great pb
 
50 years in the business in PNW area. That's a,long time and I'd think they'd have seen it all.

Thanks for the replies. Even though I trust the builder, just to be safe I think I'll have the project started in June instead of April to avoid any problems from the rain. I'm pretty sure that even if the pool could be built in the rain, the concrete decking would need to wait until the weather is dry.

The auto cover that this builder uses is by Pool Cover Specialists. Anyone know the quality of these covers, and if the pump on these covers is reliable?
 
I can't offer any advice on the auto cover but wanted to wish you luck with your up n coming build.
 
The pump for your autocover will be a third party pump. Pool cover manufacturers don't make pumps. Latham, the owner of Pool Cover Specialists, just bought them last year. They are also the owners of CoverStar brand pool covers. Coverstar provides the Little Giant APCP-1700 with their covers. A very popular highly rated & reliable pump. You just need to call or email PCS and ask them what pump they ship with covers.

I expect the reliability of the PCS Infinity 4000 cover would be on par with other auto covers. They have been around for a long time. The owners were looking to retire and sold to Latham.

If the provided cover pump is junk, the pump mentioned above is <$150.

Autocovers do need routine maintenance, so expect to have some costs. The initial $10K+ investment needs to be maintained.
