    Safe Chlorine Level?

    CYA-60

    ph 7.4

    FC 18ppm (shock target 24ppm)

    Is anything less that the SHOCK target number "safe" level for swimming?
    35,000 Gal. - 40x20x8 - Plaster - SWG Pentair IC 60 - Barracuda G3 Vacuum - Hayward c1750 Cartridge Filter - Blue Torrent VS 1.5hp pump - Pool is 45 years old.

    Phil,

    FC just under the SLAM level is safe to swim.........I would not wear a brand new suit just in case some fading happens.

    Yes, it's safe for you. But, as Kim points out it may be harder on your swimsuit - I'll just leave it at that.

    Do people still wear swim suits?

    The active chlorine level when the FC is at SLAM level which is about 40% of the CYA level is the same as in a pool with an FC of 0.6 ppm with no CYA so less than found in commercial/public pools. Nevertheless, as my wife can attest to after swimming in an indoor community center pool every winter, her swimsuits would only last for one season (elasticity gets shot) while in our own properly managed pool those swimsuits last for 7 years. It's not that the suits will degrade in a day -- it takes longer than that -- but the effects on swimsuits, skin, and hair are noticeable.
