Hayward DE Filter Clamp - Corrosion

The large clamp on my filter is nasty corroded. Just a few years ago it didn't look too bad, but it was pretty new then, so there's that.

My question, is funky chemistry to blame? Or, is this just the nature of the pot metal beast?? I just winterized and I'm planning on sanding the (golly) out of it and repainting with stove or engine paint. Unless, someone has a better suggestion.

Some are aluminum, which is a bad choice because it corrodes too easily, especially where the paint chips off.

OK. That makes sense. I'm three miles from the ocean and the paint is flaking off. Its huge, and light weight so it must be aluminum. Thanks.
