Katherine: I have to be honest here. Unless you have a robotic pool cleaner to do the dirty work of brushing, 30 minutes ain't gonna cut it. BUT, I have learned how to manage holding a beer and the vacuum at the same time so it's time well-enjoyed! Even without vacuuming and brushing, testing and adding chemicals and cleaning the skimmer socks uses up 30 minutes easy, but not much more.

You lose 3 gallons an hour? Start a thread about that and link it here so we can find it.

The only thing I would add to all the comments that have already been made is that when you use this method (TFP), you have the knowledge as to what you are doing as opposed to being a robot doing whatever the pool store says to do. You also feel confident when talking about pool maintenance with other people.
