Help with abandoned pool at new house

Hello, first post, and new to owning a pool, so please be easy on me.lol
Situation is:
I recently purchased a house, and attached is an in ground pool. It is above ground level, it looks like they made a hill, and put the pool in the hill. It's rectangular, and it's been abandoned for the past 5 years. Well, not technically abandoned, the previous owner has been keeping fish in it. The pool itself does not leak, but the skimmer does.
I would like to restore it to being a swimming pool instead of a pond. It is VERY green, can't see the bottom, and I know there's leaves in the bottom.
Aside from the skimmer, all the rest of the hardware appears to be in working condition. It is a saltwater setup.
As a new pool owner, I'm hoping I can get my without refinishing the inside of the pool, does anyone have any sort of plan that I could follow to get this thing running again?
I realise I'm gonna have to shock it, but I have no idea how lol

Well you've come to the right place because we can help you :).

The 1st thing I recommend you do is order one of these 2 test kits because you will Not be able to do what needs to be done without one of these, and I promise you it will be the best investment you can make for your pool, and being able to get it cleaned up and keep it cleaned up.

or
the Taylor K-2006 also available http://tftestkits.net/Taylor-K-2006-p27.html and also available several places on line, and some of your local pool stores may also sell them too.

You will have to SLAM your pool to get it cleaned up from the algae yuck, and the "fishes" etc. http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/125-slam-shock-level-and-maintain-shockingl A SLAM is a process not a one time thing so we need a full set of levels taken with one of the above test kits, and then we can better advise you on where to go from there.

Also if you don't mind please add all your pool information in your Signature Information by going to the top right side of this screen clicking on Settings, on the next page My Settings-----> Edit Signature.

We need to know more about the skimmer leak you have, like where is it? How bad of a leak is it? Do you see a crack in it, etc. We will need to determine if it can be repaired or if it will need to be replaced. So any additional information you can provide on this issue will help us to be able to better help you.

Also if you can post us some pictures of your pool, the skimmer leak, etc. that too can help. (A lot of us use photobucket to post our pics and all you have to do is put your pics in photobucket, and copy the IMG link in your post).

I know I've tossed a lot of things your way, but please know we will help you every step of the way. There are many people here whose #1 goal is to help you get your pool cleaned up so you can enjoy it. Feel free to ask any questions you have a long the way. Please order one of the 2 above test kits, The TF-100 gives you more bang for your buck as it gives your more reagents (Testing solutions) and with the pool needing to be SLAMmed you will be needing a significant amount of them. Also don't forget to order the XL option with it too. If you decide to get the Taylor K-2006 you will have to order reagents much sooner, but either will work, so please order whichever one you prefer.

CJ has you covered BUT I do have to say you will be better off with the TF-100 XL due to the green. If you get the Taylor 2006 or even just the TF-100 you WILL end up making another order in a short time as there is just not enough test stuff in these two for a SLAM.

Do you have any accessory equipment? A telescoping poll? Nets? Vacuum? If so, what type?

If you have a pole and a net, go ahead and start scooping whatever you can out of the pool. Since you can't see anything, it will be tough, but keep at it. You're gonna have to do it now or later. Just think, you may catch some fish!
 
Wonder if it's a koi pond? My friends rented a house that had an in ground liner pool that was turned into a koi pond. They had hundreds of fish in that pool! LOL

I have a friend here in southern California have the same thing. The pool was converted to a coy pond by previous owner and he bought the house converted back to pool. The coy were huge 20 plus pounds for the most part. He sold the coy got a few thousand dollars for them. We did look at cleaning it up but decided that it would be better empty the pool so we could get an up close look at the plaster and pump suction covers. Plaster was in very bad shape and most covers had to be replaced as they were no longer compliant for pool use. We had to replace the skimmer had some come out blast and finish with a pebble sheen all new lighting and covers. I think the bacteria level may be so high that performing a slam will take weeks if not months to complete successfully. Besides you want to take a good hard look at the plaster, covers and lighting as well with out water in it. Just my 2 pennies.
