Another recommendation was to use Pool Tite glue. Is that stuff any better than a standard PVC glue? Anyway is there a special glue/brand I should use?

I take it your connecting PVC pipe?
I used Oatey 30893 PVC Rain-R-Shine Cement, Blue and the purple primer from lowes.. it is a "hot" glue and works great as long as the outside temps are below 90 degrees, you have to be fast when connecting because it sets very fast...
it still works great above 90 degrees, you just have to be really fast when connecting

Christy's Red Hot Blue Glue is what I use for all my PVC connections.
However, the key is to use the purple primer to ensure a good, solid, leak-free joint.

We have used Oateys clear primer for over 30 years and it hasn't ever failed. Also used Oateys all weather cement there again never an issue.
Probably more important than which glue is to follow good procedure. Any pvc glue should work well as long as the joints are made correctly.
