    What IS this??

I wish I could upload a pic of my situation. I have one photo in the upload area which seems to be all I'm allotted as well as trying to insert a pic here, pop-up says I'm exceeding my limit? I don't see a way to delete the 1 photo I have in the upload area either. Frustrating.

Anyway, I have a lot of what looks like chips of tile blowing back in my pool from the returns. One side of the chips is a dark brownish color and the other bright white. I've carefully inspected all the tile around the pool as well as the plaster and there isn't anything corroding. I cleaned the 4 cartriges in my filter this past weekend and there was little to none of these chips in the filter. I'm finding them at the bottom of the pool under the returns. All I can think of is maybe they are coming from the heater? Its a Raypak 400,000 BTU Cupro-nickel model. I installed it a year and a 1/2 ago.

If anyone could explain the photo insert process I would appreciate it. I'd like to insert a pic of a pile of these "chips" and also if anyone has any thoughts regarding these odd chips I'm finding under the returns. I find a handful weekly.

Do you have a salt cell? If so, it can be built up scale inside the generator that is being released when the cell reverses polarity.

I'm stumped if you are not using a SWG though

I use photobucket (free) and then copy the IMG link to a post here. You could try that...

Storage space on the website is limited as it costs quite a bit to store large amounts of data on forum server space. Becoming a supporter gets you a little more storage space but the best way to share photos is to upload them to a file sharing website/service and link them in your posts. See Posting Photo's Tutorial

Updating your signature with your pool details would also help. Post pics when you can.

No, no SWG. Using bleach. I'm stumped too. Right off I thought maybe the face of my brown water line tile was chipping. However, the tile is intact all around the pool.

My only other thought would be scale built up inside the heater. The higher water temperature in the heater coils could cause scale to form...This is very dependent on your water balance. Where do you typically keep your numbers?

Could there be some sort of ceramic coating in the heater coils which is flaking off?

    It has a ceramic consistency.

It does look to me like scale, possibly from your heater. Do the darker brown color sides of the pieces always occur on the convex side of the pieces? If so, this would lead me to believe that this is consistent with that side of the flakes being in contact with a copper tube.

That certainly is a lot of material.

Good question. I'll have to examine it will my magnifiers. It does seem like "man made" rather then just build up of something. I can't think of any other part of the system where it might originate from. The heater is the only "newer" piece of equipment. Wondering if it is some kind of coating inside the heater? And being I get a handful a week, I think it would be noticeable if it were flaking off the inside of my pool somewhere.

    Re: What IS this??

Post a full set of test results when you can. Don't need to perform CYA test if you have recently and know the number.

    Re: What IS this??

My guess is about the same as the cost of a pool heater (except with a minus sign in front). Could it be the ceramic fiber fire tile from the heater? Does the heater actually work now?

How often do you get that much of it? Or maybe I should ask for a frame of reference like a finger or a ruler.

Sorry, my last post was sarcasm. I don't know anything about heaters, just curious in case I ever get one.

Sure looks like copper on the convex sides of the pieces. Has your pH ever been VERY low?

Yes, the heater seems to be working fine.

I'd say I get shot glass full every week for the last month or so.

I use the pool test strips. I find it hard to determine what the PH is exactly, but always seems in range.
