intex 2500 gallon pump

One wire is ground, should be yellow or green with a stripe on it. (or another two colored wire) The other two have only one color: brown and blue for example. Since it's AC the ground wire must be reconnected to the ground wire. The other two don't matter, but it is good practice to not mix colors.
This can not be correct. The wires most certainly matter for 120v applications. There is a hot, neutral, and ground.

It is correct. AC means that negative and positive alternate. In the USA you also have nonpolarized plugs, I'm clueless why you also have polarized plugs. (We have symetrical 220v sockets for both grounded and nongrounded plugs.)
nonpolarized plugs have been out of standard for decades.

Jason is correct in stating that it does matter in U.S. 120v applications. While the hot/neutral alternate 60 times a second, where those wires are connected inside a panel makes a difference. All "white" neutral wires are connected to a common bus bar in the panel. If you swap the wires downstream of the panel you have the possibility of applying voltage to the neutral bus causing a back feed.

The electrical color codes in Europe and US are different.
Paul is staing the code in Europe.

The color code in US for 220 is
REd Hot
Black Hot
Green Ground

for 120 the code in the US is
Black Hot
White Neutral
Green Ground
