Can you test bleach for chemical effectiveness

This may sound strange, but discussions on bleach storage and product becoming less useful, is there a test that could be performed to see if product still good or less and would need to use more for good results.

There are methods to attempt to test the strength, but they can be difficult to dilute accurately enough to get useful results. Try the search function

Hi karen, if you know your volume accurately and since you have a good test kit, you can add a known amount of chlorine, then use poolmath to see what increase in chlorine to expect for the expected strength of chlorine. Measure before adding and 1/2 hour after and see if you got the expected result. If not the strength is lower than you thought.

Thanks. I bought a bunch of chlorine for my SLAM and it doesn't look like I'll be needing it all. Will continue to use chlorine for the pool but season coming to close, bleach will be stored for a while.

For best storage, keep your leftovers cool and out of the sun, e.g. In the basement

In this post, I describe a very accurate dilution method that will enable you to easily test chlorine strength.

You could always purchase a Taylor Bleach Test Kit. The K-1579 retails for about $60. For those that use a lot of bleach in a Stenner Pump or Liquidator, it might be a useful tool to assess bleach strength.
