hi, so water is leaking out through the backwash, I suppose through the valve. I don't have time to do a replacement job at the moment so would it still be okay to add DE to the filter or would that eventually all go into the backwash as well?

I think it depends on whether the leak is from the input or the output to the waste line. If it's after the filter, you won't see any DE escape. If it's before, you will lose some DE when you add it to the skimmer to recharge.
