Pentair HiFlow Valve Sight Glass 272550 with vacuum projector

What does the vacuum projector, which I guess is just a thin round piece of rubber covering 3 holes in the end of the sight glass' do? The only thing I know it does is to leak water when valve is set to vacuum to waste or to rinse. I can remove the sight glass, remove the thin round rubber and put it back in the opposite side out and it seals for maybe 3 days then starts leaking again. Replaced it the whole site glass about 2 wks ago and the new one started leaking after a week. Sure makes a mess of my pump room!

I think it just allows air to be sucked in so that the backwash pipe can drain after you turn the valve back to filter.

Thanks Jason. In that case, there should be no problem in removing the sight glass and plugging the hole which is what I had in mind to stop the mess. Never look at the sight glass anyway as it is in an extremely awkward position to get to.
