Not to hijack but I am going through the exact same thing. I checked continuity on the lines out to the junction box thinking something may have shorted and did not show a short. So I am stymied as well.

Electrical shorts that a continuity test detects would show faults that trip a standard circuit breaker, not a GFCI.

The type of leakage faults that trip a GFCI breaker are quite different and require a megohm meter ("megger") to detect.

The OP has pretty clearly narrowed it down to an actual fault on the load side of the GFCI. If the FiberStar Illuminator is the only load, that, or the wires that feed it are the likely culprits.
