Using Boric Acid means no pH adjustments so it may cost less than Borax + Muriatic Acid. Duda Diesel sells 5+ pounds of Boric Acid for less than 18 cents per ounce (not including shipping) ... but if you need less and you're near a Dollar Tree store you can get it in 5 ounce bottles for $1.00 (not including tax).
 
Be careful to check any form of boric acid powder that is not sold specifically as boric acid. Make sure it is 99.9% granular boric acid with no additives. Many products that advertise as boric acid are typically sold as insect control products. They will often be a mixture of boric acid and other ingredients like diatomaceous earth.
