Cloudy pool overnight

Hi Folks.. So I went from amazing 'where is the water' to solid blue pool overnight and cannot figure out what happen. - Using K2006 btw.

8:00am FC 7.5 CC 0
11:00pm FC 4.2 CC 0 PH 7.3; added 28 oz 8.25% (all I had on hand) (target 5.2)

9:30am FC 1 CC 0 added 280 oz 8.25% (target 13) - Was a oh my moment when I saw the water and then again when my FC didn't show up.
10:20am FC 14 CC 0 added 64 oz  (target 18)
11:20am FC 15.5 CC 0 added 128 oz (target 20)
1:30pm FC 19 CC 0 no adds. (kids in the pool and didn't want to go over shock level just yet and start a SLAM)
3:30pm FC 18 CC 0 PH 7.7 (likely not correct due to high FC) TA 180 CH 150 CYA 50 Temp 88 - Filter PSI steady at 21; only up 1 psi since my backwash 3 weeks ago

Water looks a lot better this afternoon and I can see the main drains now where b4 I could not.

Full disclosure, I had tossed a 48% HTH hypo puck in the skimmer last night too. (in a skimmer sock)

Currently I think the plan is to run out for some DE for my sand filter (never used this before), and to keep the FC high until I could start a proper slam tonight.

As I type this, I know my auto cover box floods from time to time and I wonder if its a swamp and transferring bad-stuff into the pool when we open/close. Guess I need to run out and check that.

Just so happen I had taken a few pictures on Sunday before this happen.

Hello Tom. Based on your readings, I suspect that by the time you realized your FC was low, the algae was starting to bloom - hence the cloudiness. That's also probably why it appeared slightly better when you started punching that FC up significantly higher. Certainly, check your auto-fill box and any other areas where water my get stagnant, but I suspect you need to start a SLAM. Your pool is not too bad, so if you keep that FC at SLAM level for your CYA based on the Chlorine/CYA chart, you might pass the 3 SLAM criteria rather quickly. Let us know if you have any other questions.

7:00 Fc 15 CC 0, kids are out of the pool so I started the slam. Added 256 oz (target 24)
10:00 FC 24.5 cc 0
11:20pm FC 25 cc 0

Completed a top to bottom brush out. Water is already looking much much better. Could clearly see the main drains when I checked at 7pm.

Checked the auto cover box... Not clean, actually has a few plants growing in there. This doesn't surprise me.. not since the last time it flooded from rain and we found a baby snapping turtle in there. Good news is there is no standing water in the box so its not a source of algae in the pool.

Added 1 cup DE to the sand filter, PSI at 22 now (up one).

will do an overnight loss test in the AM and post a pic.
 
Pool looks amazing compared to yesterday morning.

7:10am FC 21 CC 0 - overnight loss of 4ppm, PSI up to 26, water clear. Back washed filter, added 1 cup of DE, replaced 3 inches of water (900 gal), brushed pool, cleaned out baskets. no signs of algae but will keep the slam up until the overnight test passes.

Anything I'm forgetting?

Good catch!

I do an OCLT about every other week just because it makes me happy. I feel as if it will show if anything is brewing. I do not have the heavy swimmer load you had but it is used on a regular bases as well as the stuff that blows in from the trees. Better safe than sorry.

I have you say thanks too everyone who provides input, not just on my post here but the deep history on the site. I would have been really lost will out spending several hours reading old posts. This slam is a perfect example of what could have gone from simple to really bad quickly if I have followed the pool guy (gal in this case) advise.

When I went to buy the DE I had Leslie's test my water... a quick compare to my own K2006 testing and the pool store:

The fix for my pool was 856 oz of 8.25% bleach - About $20

Had I not found this site and the followed the pool store:
15lb of Calcium Hardness - not needed for my pool type
14 oz Chlorine Neutralizer - What? would have given life to the Algae
1 qt 6 oz PhosFree - Dead Algae cannot eat

Thank you TFP for educating me and making a simple problem simple to fix!
