Need Help.

I have a 10,000 gallon above ground using the saltwater system. Got my test kit in today ... the Taylor K-2006. Super excited ... but never expected the readings I have gotten so far. (But certainly knew something was wrong with pool cuz it's always cloudy!) Mostly everything is low except ph & CC.

PH - 7.6
Calcium Hardness - 50ppm
FC - .4
CC - .12
Alk - 50ppm

How in the world do I get calcium hardness & alkalinity up?

And to get CC gone ... do I need to s.l.am. the pool??

My goal is crystal clear water! LOL ... thank you for the help!

Welcome to TFP!

No need to worry about CH in a vinyl pool. CC of .12 is fine. Ph between 7.2 and 7.8 is fine. Don't worry about TA for now, wait to see if your PH is stable for a while. If it is then leave TA alone. FC is low. Chlorine level is set based on CYA level and the Chlorine CYA Chart. Always keep FC at or above target and never let it drop below minimum or the pool will be unsanitary and algae will grow.

The water is cloudy due to insufficient chlorine, cloudy water is the first sign of an algae bloom.

I forgot to add that CYA is 30.

I'm constantly adding additional chlorine (calcium hypochlorite ) on top of the salt water pump running almost constantly.

CC=0.12ppm? How did you measure that? With a 25 ml sample using the FAS-DPD test, each drop is 0.2ppm.

In CC portion of the test, how many drops did it take to make the sample clear again?

If I remember correctly it was 6 drops.

With a 25 ml sample your CC would be 1.2 ppm (6 x .2).
You can use a 10 ml sample & save on test kit chemicals. With a 10 ml sample you just divide the drops by 2.
2 drops = 1 ppm
1 drop = .5 ppm or less

Thank you Mike for correcting me. You are definitely right on the CC ppm. Had a feeling that I messed something up along the way ... have had 5 kids today.

So is CC 1.2ppm high ... or no?

Yes 1.2 is a little high, The goal during a Slam is .5 or less.
Are you familiar with the Slam procedure & CYA/Chlorine chart?

I am a little bit familiar with the slam procedure .... I've been reading about it recently. But not familiar at all with the chart.

Note the CYA recommendation for SWG.

Also check out PoolMath. icon near top of page. It'll tell you how much chlorine to add to get up to Slam levels.
