I know that on start-up , with all the crud on the bottom -- I should vacuum to "waste". How about those everyday clean the "fuzz" off the seams jobs? Also to waste, then add more water -- or just let it go through the filter? What does the majority do?

A lot of us don't even have a waste setting on our backwash valve. The filter gets it.
Or using the vacuum plate cover allows you to collect in the skimmer (especially useful with skimmer socks) while the smallest of schmutz goes into the filter.
Been doing all my own pool work for 18 years now -- from what I read here -- I have been doing things the hard way. For example, I had never even heard of skimmer socks before now. Wow, are they great! All the dead bug bodies, tiny leaf bits, hair, and fine dirt that used to get through the skimmer basket are now caught. I rinse the bugs out every morning and in the late afternoon, I seem to have trapped a whole bunch of other stuff that would have otherwise made it into the filter. Thanks for this information!
