    pH test

@ajw22, I get ALL my stuff from TFTestKits.... got the standards sampler and extra pH standard from them first part of the month... pH meter is the $12 one they sell—ordered & rec’d in March ahead of opening, along with my complete TF 100 refill kit... will order that 7.0 standard now...

    pH test

But—in the immediate—what should I do??? Try to find a ph test in town? I’m worried about running below 7, if indeed I am... I’m turning off the heater and cranking up the speed on the accessory pump for now... c’mon bubbles!!!

Oooh! @ScottinTX thanks for that! I’m questioning all of my procedures right now—hearing that you’re having a similar experience is comforting ?...

    pH test

Oh, and yes! I did use poolmath... I’m dependent on it! I was targeting 7.2, but it didn’t seem to budge, which is why I added more... The way I explained the lack of pH drop to myself last night was that because we had to add borax during opening (a tedious ammonia break caused a huge drop in...

Ugh. That tested even lower than the probe... I suspect chlorine interference there, since it’s an aquarium kit... ??‍♀️ Here’s me testing chlorine just now...

    pH test

So now I’m really confused! How/why would the RO water have High Chlorine??? (Another issue for another day, lol) So, no—I only have the one 7.2 standard that I received last week... I didn’t know those solutions could be saved, or I would have... Expiration date on R0014 is 4/20...

FC dropped some with backwash, top off, aeration (accessories have been running all morning), and heater on... 6.5 now... (Have been waiting to raise CYA from 30 b/c we’re having the tanning ledge tiled sometime soon)... Meter reads 7.0 now. drop test consistently reading 7.5... Here’s a...

    pH test

Hi, @OTPirate! FC is lower than 10—8.5. Will test it again now, though. I don’t have any of the buffer solutions that came with the pH meter (used them for the initial calibration when I got it)—which is why I ordered the 7.2 standard (thought it would be good to have around to be able to spot...

@justinc and @Donldson— hi! 1. FC is 8.5 2. I did confirm with white paper, just couldn’t hold them all and click a pic ? 3. Just received my solution from TFTests last week (could’ve been the end of the week before) 4. Indeed it is R-0014

    pH test

Hi all!!! I got some unexpected pH readings last night with the Taylor kit, so this morning I pulled out my pH stick and pH standard... wanted to show you the pic of my results using the standard 7.2 solution with Taylor... Why would it be reading so high??? New kit rec’d in April, I...

    Help!!! Yikes!

Just tested it--thanks for the prompt! Weird lighting now, but I'd say somewhere between 10 and 20ppm. Pretty much exactly how the pool tested. . .

    Help!!! Yikes!

Will do. . . Was just re-reading the "optimum water specs" for both the Jandy and the Pentair to see where they differ/narrow down the sweet spots. Both mention nitrates should be at 0, is kinda why I ask. . .

    Black Algae?

Aahhhhh. . . brilliant! :-) So, I would crush a bunch up, put them in a nylon, hold it on the wall until they dissolved and see if that area darkened?
  20. tessv

    Help!!! Yikes!

I can do that. . . Backwash water always seems to me to be a cloudy white/grey color. . . Does the presence of Nitrates mean anything at those levels?

    Black Algae?

Thanks, @Flying Tivo! These were regular tabs. . . But a question--these stains are on the walls--if we crush them to apply, how would you do that?
  22. tessv

    Help!!! Yikes!

@JamesW, thanks. Will do... no worries/nothing to be done about the sulphur?

    Help!!! Yikes!

Thanks, @mknauss... So—just keep at the slow & steady reduction of TA??? No other way to do that besides lowering MA additions + aeration, is there?
  24. tessv

    Black Algae?

We’re going to call it “Character.” ? Thanks, @JamesW!

*a random thought... we’ve always had some calcium flakes that appear in the pool... what’s different now, though, is that this is really early in the season for us to see them... In previous years, they start showing up late June/early July—and only when the water temp was above 90... One...

    Black Algae?

Just tried the Vit C thing... I had a 500mg tab, held it on one of the dark spots ... wasn’t sure what I was looking for—here’s what I observed. The Vitamin C tab kinda slowly “fizzed” in the water...When I checked underneath where it had contact with the wall, I did not notice any lightening...

Okay... Flakes are hard/crunchy. Acid on them did two things—1. Fizz & “smoke”—left this behind: And this—2. Yellow liquid
