    Replaster Around Hydrostatic Plug

Here is a shot (not great) that I took right before they started spraying. They had chipped away around the fittings, tiles, etc... as well as removing hallowed out spots (old plaster was 17 year old standard white based upon records from prior owners). They seemed to have done a decent job (I...

    Replaster Around Hydrostatic Plug

Looking for input here before I push further with the contractor. Just had our pool replastered and my recollection was the old plaster was flush even with the plugs (I presume these are hyrdostatic valves/plugs or some sort). The new plaster appears to come above and there are "divots" around...

Cloudy Water After Adding 8.25% Bleach

Suggest taking it one thing at a time. Lower CYA by replacing water. This should also lower CH, depending on your full water. Then Lower your pH. Then if you still have cc >0 or overnight chlorine loss, SLaM.

What to do (with my pump)

Normally, I am skeptical; however, according to the chart in this link (Pentair Whisperflo Dual Speed Full Rate 1 HP Pump - WFDS-4 - INYOPools.com) if I have more than 20 feet of head, then my GPM will be zero, which equals little or no flow, correct? And if the feet of head calc does include...

What to do (with my pump)

Pretty certain I have a bad capacitor on my pump based on everything I read here. Had been contemplating a switch to a dual speed pump next year, but this is accelerating my decision-making process. Pool guy came out, recommended not going with dual speed as I have 1.5 inch piping and quite...

Preparing for Ascorbic Acid Treatment - pH rise with Polyquat 60

So bizarre. Just retested before adding MA and my pH was down to 7.4. Wasn't sure so retested and confirmed. Must have gotten a fat or extra drop this morning. Lesson learned to always retest if an unexpected result is achieved to eliminate human error. Confirmed no more FC so I guess it's time...

Preparing for Ascorbic Acid Treatment - pH rise with Polyquat 60

That makes sense but why the pH rise overnight in the first place I guess is my first question? Does Polyquat 60 cause pH to rise? I've had near constant pH between 7.4 and 7.6 since opening a month ago so it just seemed odd. TA has been between 80 and 90 as well (80 seems to be the normal sweet...

Preparing for Ascorbic Acid Treatment - pH rise with Polyquat 60

In preparing for an AA treatment to remove metal staining, I lowered my pH from 7.6 to 7.2 with Muriatic Acid on Sunday evening. Tested again last night and pH was still at 7.2. As a note my CYA was between 20-30 and my FC was at 5. Following the test I added 48 oz of Polyquat 60 anticipating...

Any Use for Old Apollo VA-52 DE Filter Parts and DE?

When I had my pool opened this year, the bolt holding the tank clamp was stripped and broke off. Given it was integrated in the tank clamp, it would have required a ~$150 replacement tank clamp. The filter is likely nearly 40 years old; so along with a number of other reasons I opted to...

    Lost Filter Pressure

Rechecked my steps this evening with more daylight, patience, and a very helpful wife. It was a clogged impeller. The end of a hanger wasn't quite doing the trick so she found a brush for cleaning straws and was able to get in there good to clear out the pine needles and other debris that got...

    Lost Filter Pressure

Signature as follows for some reason not showing even though box is checked. Apollo filter replaced as noted above. Main pump is a 1 hp pump. 28,000 gallon in-ground plaster pool, kidney shape with bump out and built-in spa Apollo VA-52 DE filter with Sta-Rite main pump / Polaris PB4-60...

    Lost Filter Pressure

Looking for some advice here before needing to call in an expert. Returned home tonight from two days out of town to find filter pressure around 6psis. Just installed a new Pentair Tagelus 60d ClearPro sand filter two weeks ago after my Apollo DE filter had some issues. The new filter had been...

Make sure I am thiking straight about pH - 7.8 TA 110

I was having a similar problem but pH was drifting more towards 8 and my TA was 110. I was adding muriatic acid every couple of days. Adjusted TA down to 90 and haven't had to add muriatic acid in about 2 weeks as my pH has been stable at 7.5. Makes me believe in the sweet spot theory and mine...

    PH issues

Does the label list the strength of the acid on it and did you plug the right amount into pool math. I buy my muriatic acid at the pool store as the bottles at the hardware stores near me are not labeled with the strength. I've read mixed thoughts on Kleen Green so just avoid it altogether...

New pool owner...understanding pump and filter (Hayward power-flo matrix pump)

Can't help you with the filter questions, but get rid of your tablets and adopt the Trouble Free Pool Care Method (Pool School - What is TFPC?). When I became the owner of a pool 2 years ago I did not and have paid for it significantly. I just adopted it this year and already feel like I have...

What Do I Need to Hook Up a Manual Vacuum?

Thanks for the reply. I saw that and thought it as well, but nothing seems to look like what I have. I took over the pool when I bought the house in 2013 and the prior owners took it over in 1993. The prior owners kept pretty good records and passed things along to the extent they had them...

What Do I Need to Hook Up a Manual Vacuum?

About to wind down a SLAM (fingers crossed to pass my OCLT 2 days in a row) and realizing a manual vac would have been nice to have and may have ended my SLAM earlier than just relying on sweeping and my Polaris 280. Searching the threads here I think I have some good ideas on what might suit...

    Vacuum adapter plate

Does it go on the basket or the floating weir inside of the basket. If my skimmer basket/weir is not labeled with the brand is there a generic vacuum adapter plate or are they all brand specific (i.e. I need to buy a new skimmer basket)?

Green Walls / Perplexed By Test Results - Help Please

No I do not have a manual vacuum. Was not with the house when we moved in and the prior owners left pretty much everything. Neither one of the pool "professionals" we've hired to help us get it up and running and then close and open the past two seasons has mentioned a manual vacuum either...

So I'm back on track after clearing out the PhosFree last night. Continued my SLAM overnight and through today. This morning the water was by no means clear and when I brushed there was a good bit of "dust" that came up off the bottom, but not nearly the amount that was there Sunday morning...

Green Walls / Perplexed By Test Results - Help Please

I had passed all three tests for completing the SLAM so there was no visible algae (even the grey dust on the bottom). The algae reappeared the morning after I started the phosfree treatment. It had been gone for 24 hours. Instructions only saying testing for phosphates has to be below 5ppm, not...

I know, I know. I could have cried after I did it. It felt like cheating on a diet....sounded like a good idea at the time but I knew it was wrong! Flushed the filter clean with a good backwash, recharged it and replaced the chlorine lost during the sunlight today (about 3ppm) with container of...

First let me say, please don't yell at me as I have already done so myself along with a few kicks. I started my SLAM the morning of July 16 and by July 18, my water was clear, I had zero CC, and my OCLT showed less than 1ppm loss for two nights in a row. So on the evening of July 18...

Thanks! Its our second one, so with the other little one, a crazy yard to maintain and the pool, oh yeah and a full time job, the past couple of weeks have been fun. This site has been a life saver though. I just wish I had discovered when I acquired the pool nearly two years ago!
