    MOVING a pool?

Trim some trees? Move the house? With this kind of advice, you kind folks better head over here to help! :-D Part of the trouble is that the adjacent lot is a forest (the south and west side). No cutting down gonna happen! It hurts my head to figure out why the previous owners put the pool...

    MOVING a pool?

OK, just an idea we're kicking around... We inherited the pool with the house, and realized after a while that the original owners put the pool on the shadiest part of the yard. We're thinking about the feasibility of MOVING it to the other side where there is much more sun. Currently, we use...

Is this ok for my new mesh cover?

Cool. (I haven't dared look under the cover yet.) One of the lessons I've learned with this kind of cover is to be sure to have the cover tight. (I still don't understand why this type of cover recommends NOT to use a pillow underneath. Anyone have an explanation on that one?)

Is this ok for my new mesh cover?

Ok, thanks. Good to know. To be safe, though, I *did* pump off the excess, then cleaned the debris off the cover. I figure there will be much more rain to contend with by the time May rolls around.

Is this ok for my new mesh cover?

Interesting, Cheryl. First -- and maybe most importantly -- we may have our terminology askew. Your "mesh cover" looks VERY different than mine. Yours looks like "mesh." Mine looks like a solid cover, but isn't. (See picture in first post.) `Are these the same thing? Second -- an update...

Is this ok for my new mesh cover?

An update: The big leaf drop has passed, and we've had 50+ inches of snow, and multiple ices/thaws. (I was concerned about the cover blowing off, since it just sits on the water, but despite some billowing, no problems. The cover is just fine. No pillow needed. As one poster mentioned, the...

Is this ok for my new mesh cover?

It's a mesh cover, so that water *is* the pool water. The cover is sort of sitting *in* it.

Is this ok for my new mesh cover?

My new micro-mesh cover is sinking into the pool water. (I thought it was supposed to sort of *sit* on the water.) I'm worried that when it freezes, it will damage the cover. There are no leaves on the cover, and the cable is tied tightly around the cover perimeter. Any thoughts...

    Which kind of AG cover?

No takers at all? Has anyone used a mesh winter cover?
  11. antipode

    Which kind of AG cover?

I'm considering either a solid cover or a mesh cover for my AG pool. My conditions: * moderate-hard winters * LEAVES! Oh so many leaves! * Rainy springs * Many animals and birds using the cover as a toilet/bath in spring (* water supply is not expensive here) Equipment: * a tiny cover pump...

Hijack away. I'm learning right along with you.

What if my CYA is low?

What effect , if any, will it have on my water? Can I just go all season without it?

    Wrong wire size on pump?

I already posted that my new Hayward pump had a "blade" style plug instead of the twist lock. So, I was going to replace the plug end as advised. When I cut it off, I realized that the new pump's cord is 16 AWG wire. (The pump is a 1.5 HP, 12 amp; the receptacle is 20amp; the OLD pump was...

    Opening a really murky pool

Just to follow-up: My CYA is today at 20 (is that right that it dropped 20 in one day?) and my FC is at 10. But the pool is still cloudy and getting greener. According to the chlorine chart, my shock FC level should be 10. Also, it's going to rain hard later today.

    Opening a really murky pool

That may be part of what's throwing me: I've read some of the articles in "Pool School" and didn't read anything about "shock level." I think I've been targeting chlorine numbers for regular maintenance. So, to shock, I want 16? Does TA, pH, or CYA have a different "shock level" also? And...

    Opening a really murky pool

OK, so maybe I'll lay off the tabs for now... Meanwhile, I took a new test, and all of my numbers are in the ideal range: FC = 6 CYA = 40 pH = 7.6 Alkalinity = 100 BUT, the pool is foggy and looks a little green. What's wrong?

    Opening a really murky pool

For your amusement: new numbers. OK, the pH and alkalinity are still low. The chlorine is now off the chart at 10. CYA is at a cool 0. Balance the alka and pH, let the chlorine burn off, and then add CYA? The water is blue-ing up, but it's foggy still.

    Opening a really murky pool

I figured on that. OK, so I will add some 6% bleach when necessary, right? Hahaha. As if it were that easy. She added 2 bags of the dichlor, and 3/4 bag (I don't know why) of the MPS. At this point, it's probably just easier to note the levels in the morning. 'll keep you posted. Thanks...

    Opening a really murky pool

Haha OK - FYI - since everyone (including myself) want to know what the heck is in the chemicals I'm blindly dumping in my pool: Chlorine "Bullet Tabs"= Trichloro-s-triazinetrione (63%) (Package says "available chlorine = 56%") Shock package #1= potassium peroxymonosulfate (38%) (Package says...

    Opening a really murky pool

I hear your enthusiasm and I have no reason to doubt it, but you know how some people are with these things. Understand, most of us who grew up with pools went to the pool store, put in chlorine tabs, etc... (It's the same way that I can't get my mother to switch from diet soda to regular soda...

    Opening a really murky pool

So here's the status: my fiancee didn't feel comfortable going with bleach, so she has so far added 4 bags of shock, and 3 mini-tabs of chlorine. It's gone from brown to teal green and foggy. We don't have a tester for CYA, but I'll get one tomorrow. In general, are we headed in the right...

    Opening a really murky pool

I think you already know the answer to that question: the pool store. We walked out with 3 liters of black algaecide, 2 buckets of chlorine "bullet tabs," and a case of shock. After giving them our money last season, I thought I'd try the communal knowledge of the forum.

Why is the pressure too high?

Thanks. To be clear, where can I look for a blockage? I have the intake/ basket/ impeller on the pump (all clear) and the hose to the multi port (also clear). Where else might I look? It can't be the filter sand or anything in the filter itself?

    Opening a really murky pool

Thanks folks. I'll get you numbers in the morning (I have a little color-coded set), but in the meantime, my fiancee has dumped some Black Algaecide into the pool already and has it filtering some 6 hours. Does that change the plan for liquid bleach? I have to read up on this bleach idea. It...

    Opening a really murky pool

The cover had a couple of holes, it rained like heck in April, May, June, and it hasn't been hot (80+) yet this summer. The water is brown, like BROWN brown. How to go about opening it? So far, I've backwashed. Black Algaecide next? Shock? Mineral treatment? Any direction would be...

Why is the pressure too high?

OK, so many questions... My filter is running at 30 psi after a good clean backwash, which is higher than it usually is. Also, it is leaking a trickle around the multi-port. I just opened and the water is murky. I also am replacing the pump this week because the shaft and bearings are rusted...
