First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

Hi, all, A few pics today! Not quite there in terms of clarity, but getting really close. I think most people would say we've got a clean, sparkly pool...but I've seen the photos of what you all have gotten to. Just added more chlorine to get us back up to SLAM level, but used some CalHypo...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

Hi, all - Just an update after the long weekend of unpacking our house and working on the pool: Water's almost completely clear (still not quite clear enough!). We've been passing the OCLT for some days now and CC is never above .5, but keep on pushing for clearer water, and that seems to be...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

Brilliant idea from those who suggested this! Just did this for my morning test. FC at 11.5, CC at .4. Held with less than 1 ppm drop overnight, which is great news! Water's still not clear, though. I'm guessing with the very low drop overnight and because we've only had this up and running...

Totally not worried about the CYA if I don't need to be - just wondering if it would be useful to get the number higher. I know we're lucky that we don't have too high of a CYA right now after reading so many other new TFPer stories. Just tested at 8.8 on FC and .2 on CC. Adding more bleach...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

No - I am sorry! I was so eager to get home and check my chlorine levels that I didn't read the thread first. I will never make that mistake again! Holding steady at 10.4 fc, .4 cc right now, and we've vac'd and brushed the you know what out of it! I will check ph next time fc drops down...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

Woohoo! Just got home today and the pool is no longer green, just cloudy (big improvement). Can see all the way to the bottom of the deep end (very hazy) to a dark pile of muck which we're about to vacuum out. FC had dropped down quite a lot during the day (11.6 this morning, right about 1...

I didn't do it before starting the slam...but we've only been at it less than 24 hours. Should we do that now before we're finished? Or wait until things start to settle out after?

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

Just tested again before I head to work after the addition at 7:30 - FC came in at 11.6 which is a little higher than we need (10). Heading to work, though, and I know it will be a while before I get back (about 5:00). Have to head out now, but wondering if we could / should use some pucks...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

That's definitely a fair point - we have a HUGE crape myrtle very near the pool, and now that you mention it, it did start flowering in the past week or so...weird! I guess we'll see what happens over the course of the slam? Our new vacuum hose just arrived, so we'll be vacuuming this...

Okay, some photos: I tried to get a picture of the algae at the bottom (also some on the walls, but not as clumpy as this). Can't tell if this is mustard algae or not? Also, we can see the bottom of the shallow end today, so that's an improvement!

Will read on the algae - not sure if this is it or not, but it's definitely in there. Some pics below - not sure if you'll be able to see it or not! On the pucks: We don't have any in there now, but we're wondering if we should add either some pucks or some plain old stabilizer to get the CYA...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

8:30 PM - Added 4 1/2 121 oz. containers of bleach. One was a bit past its prime, maybe not quite strong enough? 10:30 PM - Tested again - FC 2.2 CC .4 Adding another 121 oz of bleach tonight to take us back up to 10. As we'll be asleep and are clearly fighting off algae, should we add...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

Updating again: Test result time! TC: .4 FC: .6 pH: 8 TA: 8 CYA: Off the charts low, less than 30 (tested 3 times, used a test strip we had to confirm - came back lighter than the 'very low' color) CH: Didn't test - vinyl pool - can we skip this for now? So, according to pool math, we need...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

:) Okay, almost done testing but we're having trouble with the CYA, just like everybody predicted! We've done it twice now, new samples each time, and we can fill the tube high enough for the black dot to disappear...it gets pretty blurry at 30, but if I'm honest, I can still see a dot. Is it...

This is really great advice - we feel pretty comfortable with the pump and that system. We're totally with you all in ditching the pool company for service, but the guys who installed the new liner did do a great job of teaching us about the way the equipment works and how to clean / service /...

First house, first pool, first SLAM time ... feeling nervous!

Hi, everybody! I thought I'd write and introduce myself and my husband. We've been lurkers for the past couple of weeks since we bought our first house (with our first pool!) Background (Also will add the pertinent details to my signature in a bit): We bought a badly-damaged swamp (total...
