    I also thought opening the pump basket lid might break the siphon, but it did not. Thank you for your patience, I am clearly an idiot for turning the valve when the pump was on. Am trying to open up the valve now.

    Oh, I did not turn the pump off when I switched from filter to waste. Would I have damaged the gasket? The pump is now off but the water is still pouring out through the drain - - - Updated - - - The filter is at a higher elevation than the pool.

    A few months ago, we were losing water to the waste pipe when then pump was switched on. We changed the spider gasket and that fixed the problem. Our pool has an overflow pipe and after the heavy rain we've experienced in Houston, the overflow pipe was not flowing. I flicked the pump valve...
