I can't get the main pump to pump water, only air

I am just coming out of the winter mode where I drained the water from sand filter and removed plugs on the filter pump and the Pentair automatic pool cleaner. Now I am trying to get to pool water balanced but I can't get the main pump to pump water. Only air. I have not changed the position of...

    Installation of Solar Cover

Thanks for the helpful info. Here is how I decided to approach the situation I previously posted. With the solar cover on the FC will gradually increase if I continue adding the 48 oz bleach each day. I will try to keep the FC in the 1 - 3 ppm range. For the next several mornings I will use...

    Installation of Solar Cover

The pool temperature is in the low 80s which means it is time to put on the solar cover to extend the swimming season. We do not have a reel for the solar cover. In the past, before I switched to BBB, the trichlor tablets would cause the solar cover to deterioate in a couple of years. With the...

What is next after adding Borate?

Adding Borates for the first time and have some questions. Here is a brief recount of my actions: 1. I have finished adding the 20 Mule Team Borax and muriatic acid according to the procedures waterbear provided in April 2008. 2. Right now I am in step 8 of his procedures where I let the pump...

Good. That is the answer I needed and definitely will be most convenient for me. Wonderful forum. Thanks for all the help.

    Low CYA

Yesterday morning: Water temperature 75 and pool is uncovered. Water is crystal clear but FC is 1 ppm and CYA is less than 20 ppm. Used the Pool Calculator and decided to add 364 oz bleach to get the FC higher. Added tri-chlor tablets to the auto chlorinator since we are going out of town...

Hot Tub Water Smell like Chlorine

When you suggest a non-chlorine shock do you mean potassium monopersulfate? I use the TF-100 test kit to test the water. Will the reagents in this kit check for CCs? I only measured the FC this morning and it was 17 ppm. The hot tub was uncovered and everything was off. At what level should...

Hot Tub Water Smell like Chlorine

In response to the assistance provided by spishnex earlier today, I looked back at the water test data and saw I failed to provide some significant info. Here is a correction and the current test data. At 6:30 AM on 20 Oct I reported the FC was 7.5 ppm, which it was. After that I added bleach...

Hot Tub Water Smell like Chlorine

I think the chloramines in my indoor hot tub need to be reduced. The water smell like chlorine. Here are the results of testing the water: Early morning of 17 Oct: FC: 2.5 CC: about 0.7 pH: 7.8 TA: 80 CH: 150 Borates: 50 CYA: 30 The hot tub was filled (300 gallons) on 12 Oct. I have been...

    Indoor Hot Tub

I had read the article by Nitro previously and could not locate it. His approach is what I will use except I will pump water from the pool to the hot tub. Since there are presently no borates in the pool should I first bring the borate level to 50 ppm and then balance water? If for some...

    Indoor Hot Tub

I am getting ready to fill my indoor hot tub and was wondering what the CYA level should be. What are the recommended levels and rank of importance of CYA, calcium hardness, TA, pH, FC and CC? I will probably pump water from the pool directly to fill the hot tub. Where are the water...

    What WAS in my pool!!

I was thinking pool volume I use of 21,000 gallons could be low. I will raise it to 22,000 gallons and use the Pool Calculator to determine the required amount of bleach to add. How long should I keep the FC level elevated? My recent posts report the test results.

    What WAS in my pool!!

Here are the results of today's 6:30 AM testing: FC 11.5 ppm CC 0 ppm The FC results raise questions. Last evening the FC was 8.5 and I added 182 ounces Chlorox bleach. According to the Pool Calculator my FC should have been almost 13 but it was 11.5. At 6 PM on 28 Sep the FC was 5...

    What WAS in my pool!!

Tested the water at 6:30 PM: FC 8.5 ppm CC 0 ppm According to pool calculator 182 ounces of bleach should get the FC close to 13 ppm. Since the CYA is 20 ppm this bleach addition will get the pool back to the shock level. Oily film is slowly disappearing, I think.

    What WAS in my pool!!

The 6:30 AM test results are: FC 12.5 ppm CC 0 ppm The smell from the dead possum is just about gone. There was insufficient daylight to determine if the oily film on the water surface was gone. Will test FC this evening and report results.

    What WAS in my pool!!

I want to add the bleach through the skimmer to have a faster impact on the sand filter. I know if I add the bleach directly to the pool water it will eventually make its way through the filter. Duraleigh recommended elevating the chlorine level. Therefore, I added the remaining quantity of...

    What WAS in my pool!!

6 PM results of water testing: FC 5 ppm CC 0.5 ppm FC loss from 8 PM last evening to 6 PM today was about 6 ppm. Added 2 jugs (364 ounces) bleach. I will retest in the AM. The stink is almost gone. Water is still crystal clear with a few bleached possum bones scattered on the pool bottom.

    What WAS in my pool!!

Thanks for all the good advice. I failed to mention I had put a nylon sock over the skimmer basket. That appears to be catching the oily film on the water surface. This morning I scrubbed the vinyl above the current water level with a product called Off the Wall. I had it from a previous...

    What WAS in my pool!!

That information is pretty much what I had decided to try. Here is my current plan and actions: I have the filter and automatic Pentair pool cleaner on for 24 hours each day. Last night I added 182 ounces of bleach without first measuring the FC level. Anything that gets that foul pool...

    What WAS in my pool!!

I've heard the saying if you live long enough you will probably see or hear just about anything. Well here is a new one for me. After church this morning we decided to let the grandkids swim in the pool. I have had the solar blanket on the pool since 2 Sep. We took it off long enough on 12...

    What Does This Mean?

I thought the FC must be 0 so I went ahead and added 364 ounces of bleach. According to the pool calculator this should get me in the 8 ppm range. I will do a retest tomorrow. Regarding your question on why I waited 4 days without checking the FC. As I wrote, the FC was 7 on 21 Sep and 7...

    What Does This Mean?

I did the Chlorine Drop Test at 8 AM this morning and got questionable readings. After adding the R-0871 powder to the test water the solution did NOT turn pink. It stayed clear. I thought maybe the R-0871 powder was old so I tried some I had recently purchased. Same results-- clear. What...

    Out of Town Again

Thanks to everyone for the great information you provided earlier this month. Returned home today and the water in the pool was sparkling crystal clear. The 3 inch tabs worked as expected. Here are my 7 PM readings: FC 4 CC 0 TA 90 CYA 40 - not seeing that darned dot is like black magic. I...

    Out of Town Again

Water is sparkling crystal clear. Tested the water this morning in preparation for leaving the pool unattended for a week. Here is where I am right now: FC 15.5 : I will not add bleach till tomorrow night. Tody's UV will lower this measurement. TA 80 pH 7.8 CYA - Did not measure. It was 40...

    Out of Town Again

I won't stray from using the TF-100 test kit. I am a believer and user of it. Let me see if I am using the pool calculator correctly. My current CYA is 40, if my FC is 6 then you want me to raise it to 30. That means 1045 oz of bleach. Is that correct? Wonder what crazy comment the...

    Out of Town Again

I'm dense but I do understand not to use the MPS. I will increase the TA to 100 - 140 and the pH to 7.8 before I leave. I will buy some tablets and plan to put them in the automatic chlorinator. Should I plan on filling the chlorinator tank? It will hold about 15 of the tabs. How about the...

    Out of Town Again

    1. Covering with a solar blanket is not an option. 2. Having the parents of the "grands" add a to be determined amount of bleach is not feasible. Since no comments were made regarding me using potassium monopersulfate (mps), my question is "will mps prevent algae from getting started"? I know...

    Out of Town Again

Looks like the pool will be unattended next week for 7 or 8 days. I have finally gotten rid of the previous algae problem and don't want a repeat. Problem is how do I keep from getting algae? I have no tablets/pucks to put in the chlorinator and have no di-chlor. I do happen to have several...

    Best time to operate filter?

What is the best time to operate the filter? At night or during the daylight hours? I run my filter pump 12 hours each day. Since I am going to test daily and add necessary chemicals the pump filter needs to be operating. Should the filter pump be operating when swimmers are not in the pool...

    Multiple Pool Problems

About 4 hours ago I added 3 lbs of CYA to a sock in the skimmer basket. The water now looks crystal clear. How many hours each day should I run the filter pump? Should I wait a week before measuring the CYA in the water? Any other words of wisdom for me?
