    Winterize in-ground pool

I put the pool noodles through the weir door opening extending into the skimmer area. The pool antifreeze I use seems to be a little heavier than water?? Even after all of the rains and snow melt, I still have some pink liquid in there come spring. I can try the noodles in the main skimmer...

    Winterize in-ground pool

I always pour the pink stuff into my plugged off skimmer when I close the pool down for winter. Necessary? I don’t know but it gives me a little more protection. I don’t use the screw in gizmos anymore either. I install a rubber expansion plug in there then drop in an empty gallon jug...

We made it to gunite... finally!

I have nothing technical to add on your build because I have no pool building experience. But I will say that I am part of a few forums besides this one (the others are automobile related). This is the only pool forum you need to be on. The details and advice you have received here from the...

    First time closing with SWCG

For both of my skimmers I have always removed the weir doors when I closed the pool. The issue is that they are a major pain in the butt to reinstall in the spring. Any harm in leaving them in place? I typically put a #10 plug in the bottom of the skimmer and have a weighted, empty 1 gallon...

    First time closing with SWCG

I pulled the Circupool unit for the winter. The manufacturer recommends soaking and cleaning it with a solution of one part muriatic acid to 4 parts water. This is to remove scale. My unit was installed this summer and it looks perfectly clean. So I rinsed it with tap water and let it dry...

    First time closing with SWCG

Are there any tablets left in the feeder in the spring? Does your water freeze? Mine gets a couple inches of ice during the winter. The feeder would also freeze. Opening in March….I’d have to run the snowblower over the cover to do that. 😂

    First time closing with SWCG

I do typically open early. The mesh cover lets all sorts of debris get in over the closed season. It’s always green come April. I typically peel back the cover, pour a few gallons of LC in there and drop in the aquabot cleaner in there. It clears up in a couple days. You think the poly 60...

I’ve never used poly 60 before. I’ll have to look into that.

    First time closing with SWCG

I was planning on removing it. I go a tad overboard and remove everything anyway. 😂 I bring the pump, the multiport valve and the check valve indoors for the winter. Pretty much all that’s left out there is the hard plumbed valves, the heater and DE housing. I was more asking about chemical...

    First time closing with SWCG

I’ve successfully closed my pool for the past 20+ years. This year, I converted to salt water so I’m wondering if there are any other things to consider. I’m putting the mesh cover on it today because the leaves are starting to fall. Anything different I need to do as far as balancing besides...

    CircuPool RJ-60+ vs Universal-55

Just my 2 cents…. I made the switch this past summer from liquid chlorine to the RJ60+ from DSP. My pool is 28k gallons and this thing kicks butt! Rated at 3.1 pounds/day. For my pool that’s around 13ppm. My pool would lose 4 ppm per day in the 90 degree summer days and I had the SWCG set to...

Help With Sand/Dirt Coming Back Into Pool

Glad you have the good test kit. Keeping track of you tests is great. Glad you are doing that but the PoolMath app is fantastic for that. It has other useful features besides keeping track of your test results as well. I highly recommend it

Help With Sand/Dirt Coming Back Into Pool

You mentioned a stuck valve on a chlorine feeder. You are using a tablet feeder? If so, your CYA could be so high that your normal free CL level is inadequate to prevent algae. In addition, a CYA reading of 55 is an oddball number for an accurate test using one of the recommended test kits...

    Leak in Pool

Sorry you are going through all of this. What’s the size of those? Put a nickel or dime next to one for scale. Looks like there was some contamination in the plaster that got etched away over time and left a void??

Total Alkalinity and Pentair Pool Heater

Being a guy who likes to repair everything myself, that’s would I would do as well considering the thing is less than 2 years old. Take plenty of pictures from multiple angles before tearing into it and also during the process. That helps immensely when putting it back together. You can see...

How to blow out returns without draining below them.

I’d also like it higher initially because the mesh cover is huge and heavy. It’s a fairly large pool. The pool has a raised beam in the deep end for a sheer descent water feature. So I’m pulling the cover up about 3’ on the deep end to the deck. See pic below. Imagine the water about 16”...

How to blow out returns without draining below them.

Yes… two people would help. But it’s just me. I use the orange cyclone blower. It would be a one person job if I installed a pressure relief valve in the hose I use for blowing. Then when I plugged the line, the blower pressure would come out of the relief valve but I don’t want to...

How to blow out returns without draining below them.

I’m thinking ahead for closing the pool. Each year I drop the water level down low enough so it’s below the returns. I always lower the water, blow them out, add pool antifreeze at the equipment pad and blow that through as well. Then plug them. The issue is that it’s about 16” of water as...

    Metals in my pool

Is the water clear? Filter pressure good? Other that the TA being on the upper end of the range, get that liquid chlorine in there. You need to keep that in spec so you don’t get algae.

    Metals in my pool

It’s not an apples to apples comparison for the %. A one pound bag of the 65% cal hypo stuff will raise the chlorine in your 17k gallons by 4.5 ppm One gallon of 10% bleach will raise your chlorine by 5.9 ppm.

    Metals in my pool

Yea, I would get my chlorine shock from a store called Ocean State Job Lot. They sell the 12.5% stuff by the case of 4 gallons. Since my CYA at the time was 40, I had to add 4 gallons of the stuff to bring my free chlorine up to SLAM level. Then kept adding throughout the day and subsequent...

    Metals in my pool

In the beginning of this pool season when I first opened the pool from the winter mess and debris ( I have a mesh safety cover), I would add 3 gallons of 12.5% bleach which is 13 ppm in my pool. It would be down to zero ppm by the next day. Water was slightly cloudy, then clear up, then be...

    Metals in my pool

If your pool is eating chlorine, it’s either strong sun or you have organic in there eating it. Like algae. Cloudy water is the pre cursor to algae. Losing 10pm /day is algae most likely An overnight chlorine loss test will tell you for sure. It’s called OCLT here.

Wow, that is resort-like! Good thing you’re not in the northeast, that would be a nightmare to winterize! 😂 I missed the size, how many gallons? Gotta be close to 40k?
