Bought a Hayward sp2602vsp variable speed pump to replace the pump that came with the cartridge filter. Do I need a diverted valve at my filter?

Well it looks like those guys installing the pool bought 1 1/2". I told them I wanted 2". Will 1 1/2" work with two returns with the farthest return being about 40' away? Would I have to upgrade the pump from the 1 1/2 hp?
