    Doheny Discovery Issues

I've had my Doheny's Discovery cleaner for about 2 years. In that time, I've had a similar problem twice. The first time, it was a problem with the power supply and they shipped me a new one. The second time, it was a problem with the motor and I took it in to be repaired. In any case, give...

    DE filter pressure never rises

It does go to 0 with the pump off (or with water bypassing the filter). The filter is only a few years old and the behavior hasn't changed since day 1.

Pentair CYA test shows near zero

They use this test at my pool store. (Don't worry, I don't trust their results - but once or twice a year out of curiosity I'll compare theirs to mine. My pool store is probably among the better ones when it comes to test accuracy.) It always made sense to me with the sliding dot, as it's the...

    DE filter pressure never rises

Thank you guys. This will save me both time and money. I had "backwash filter" on my calendar every month, although I usually ignore it, so I will probably change it to once a year... my pool in Central Florida stays open all year and is used March-December with the solar heater and solar cover...

    DE filter pressure never rises

I've had my Hayward DE3620 filter for about two years now (maybe longer - can't recall). Although I backwash it from time to time and clean the grids once or twice a year, I do it only because it feels like I should and never because there's an indication it needs it. The pressure on the gauge...

Can I use summer rain to lower CYA?

I also live in Central Florida. Although I rarely use tabs, I think that probably you could get away with it here to some extent in the summer without horrible effects due to the amount of rainfall. I find myself adding CYA multiple times per year just to keep it at 30.

Does a higher CYA in summer have advantages?

I think he's saying that at 50, if you need to use pucks temporarily (e.g., out of town for a week or two), there's still a little room for CYA to be increased without it being dangerously/ineffectively high.

Do you dip for each test OR fill a jar and do tests with a single container of pool w

I use one of these and it is great for both taking the sample and dispensing it into the test tube:

Will going salt help with algae? A pHin Discussion

Re: Will going salt help with algae? A pHin Discussion As you can see, people here are not fans of PHin. We do not believe the tests to be accurate, the system to be manageable in the long run, nor the cost to be a good value. I made so many mistakes in my first year of pool ownership. Thought...

Yep, that's what I do, too. They pop right off.

Need a measurement for testing chlorine.

I don't think the exact amount is so important so long as it turns the solution pink. Many of us only use one scoop although the instructions are for two.

    Getting ready for Irma

Sorry if I am repeating discussion from Harvey threads. I am in Orlando, and it's still up in the air how Irma may affect us. Certainly a good possibility of significant rainfall (not Harvey levels here) and damaging winds. What should my priorities be before, during and after the storm? I have...

Add chlorine directly to pool or through the skimmer?

Adding to the skimmer is not recommended and I don't see how this could cause FC loss. I would think that any organic matter in the filter would already be "dead" from past chlorine having done its job on it. Without knowing your specific situation, you daily loss does not seem high. But if...

    Sanitizing with liquid chlorine

Sorry to get off track, but I would be very concerned about poor insulation between your garage and other parts of your house (especially a bedroom above it). Recipe for a carbon monoxide incident. A proper spray foam insulation can create a vapor barrier. Of course, then you'd have a bleach...

    PH Keeps Going Up

As previously mentioned, if you used to use trichlor (pucks), it had the side effect of lowering pH. Now that you switched to chlorine, that's not happening. It's not that the chlorine is adding something that causes the rise. The rise you describe is pretty normal for most of us, especially if...

    Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club

Although it's a "Doheny's Discovery", they don't try to hide the fact that it's made by Maytronics and "powered by Dolphin". When I bought it, it came with Maytronics warranty and registration information. When I called, they asked for my name, looked me up based on my product registration, and...

    Could trichlor be a solution?

I think it's because I live on a small lot and my yard and pool are partially shaded throughout the day by neighbor's trees and my house (unfortunately this also shades out my garden). In testing daily in late June and early July, I find that I lose on average 2-3ppm FC daily. Typically, I'll...

    Could trichlor be a solution?

I live in Central Florida, where we have intense sun and also usually intense rains in the summer. I quit using trichlor pucks two years ago when I found this site, for the obvious reasons. However, as I'm halfway through my second summer without using them, I find that I am adding CYA to the...

    Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club

Well, after a few months, my refurb Doheny's Discovery's power supply bit the dust. Tried to turn it on this morning before a pool party, and got nothing. Called Maytronics and they are sending a replacement. Pretty disappointing considering I keep it on a covered lanai (about 10' from any...

    Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club

Re: Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club I am biting the bullet and going with the Discovery. I figure the extra year of warranty is worth the $200 price difference over the Saturn, and any better job is does cleaning the water line is a bonus. Sent from my SM-G920F using...

    Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club

Re: Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club I'm leaning heavily toward the Saturn based on the features and price point. It can't be worse than the very old Polaris that it's replacing (which generally did a fine job despite it's constant problems). I'll report back once I get it...

    Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club

Re: Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club Sounds like we're in the same boat. With the screen enclosure, I would only run my Polaris once a week, and even then it wasn't a heavy clean. I would go months sometimes without cleaning out the bag. I brush the walls maybe once a...

Re: Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club Nursenini, which cleaner do you have? I'd be curious to hear from someone who has the Saturn (S100). Seems like it has most of the Discovery (S200) features except it has a filter bag. Doheny's has the refurb for $480 which is a great...

    Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club

Re: Doheny's Discovery, S200, Active20, Triton owners club My old Polaris needs another $200 in repairs so I think it's probably time to replace it. Based on this thread, the Discovery certainly seems like the best option. But here's my question... I have a 16k gallon pool with a screened...

    How are my levels?

Plaster is at least a few years old (I've lived in house for over 2 years). I'll try to lower TA. Should I then turn the spillover back on to get pH back up to the desired range, or should I leave it and see what happens? Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk

    How are my levels?

I've been following this site for almost a year, and started doing my own testing exclusively with a K-2006 test kit in the spring. Here in Central Florida, I keep the pool open year-round (with the solar heater and thermal blanket, it's currently running 82 despite an unseasonably cool week)...

    Polaris questions

After re-reading your response, I now see you're suggesting running it for a short amount of time each day AND an extended amount once a week. That is not realistic given the amount of work involved, unfortunately. I can play with the valve to see if I can find the right mix of pressure to the...
