Granular Super Shock not Dissolving? (HTH)

For convenience right now we're using HTH Super Shock to maintain our chlorine level. I know I should use liquid bleach / chlorine but alas, this is what works for us right now. Recently, when adding the super shock, I've noticed it doesn't dissolve well. I have to spend extra time pushing it...

Does cloudy / algae water effect CYA reading?

My water seems awfully cloudy to be trying to do a Taylor CYA test and interpret the little dot... The numbers I'm getting are plausible but I wanted to see if cloudy water could alter the results... I had a massive algae bloom in both the pool and spa. I'm in the process of bringing them back...

Hayward Ecostar Pump Freeze Protection Setting

Does anyone know if the Hayward MaxFlo has a similar setting buried in the menu? I have the SP2302VSP.

Should I Drain and Acid Wash?

When killing algae am I running the pump for the sole purpose of circulating the bleach? THEN would I try to filter our the dead algae? The filter seems to be a huge limiting factor for us. It clogs very quickly, I was seeing an 8 psi rise within 1.5 hours of pump operation at 3000 rpm. Also...

Should I Drain and Acid Wash?

Thank you for your reply! I started the SLAM process last night as I am finally able to devote the time this week. I am using the Taylor K-2006 test kit. I have been familiar with the SLAM procedure for several years now, although I am not usually as strict/disciplined in it's execution! I...

Should I Drain and Acid Wash?

All season I have been struggling with an algae filled pool! I am in the military and travel often and have only a few weeks home followed by a few weeks away. I do all the pool maintenance myself and typically slam using only Bleach and sometimes shock packs bought from CostCo. This year has...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

Should I be concerned about air in the pump inlet skimmer? When I first installed the pump the skimmer had no air at all, then after a few minutes I saw the occasional bubble similar to my last pump. Now even at full speed the basket is never completely full. This morning I also noticed it took...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

So why am I running the pool pump throughout the day then? Just to vacuum?

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

This is very helpful but obviously I'm confused. I thought running the pump long enough to turn the water over at least once was important in circulating the chlorine to kill algae? I also can't tell the difference between live or dead algae. I spend a lot of time brushing the entire pool but I...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

Thanks for all the help. The Hayward is up and running and is whisper quite. I also decided to forego the unions as I have plenty of PVC for cutting/repairs to work with left. Now I just need to find some energy efficient settings that work for keeping my pool clean. Unfortunately my pool was...

    IC40 Dead, what to do...

I have an old Pentair IC40 that failed on me several years ago. I tried cleaning it back then, even called Pentair, and could never really figure out what happened to it. It has been plugged in and operating ever since so I imagine it is definitely done now. For what its worth while I had was...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

Edit - I was considering Heat bending the pipe but instead purchased two 45s which will be adequate for the step down. Much easier fix than heat bending. Two questions remain: Can I consider the two 45's as part of the 10" straight inlet into the pump (for 2" PVC)? Or should I extend it...

My embarrassing pipes... (are they impeding flow?)

Why did he need the union? I am trying to install a new pump with a lower inlet height. I would prefer not to cut out the two valves prior to the pump inlet. I'm considering some method to step the inlet down, hopefully something that looks less ridiculous than this.

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

So I began the pump replacement today. Unfortunately the inlet for the Hayward sits about one inch lower than that of the Pentair. Looking for best solutions to step the inlet down to the pump or raise the pump. Edit - Looks like stepping the plumbing down is not the answer as it will challenge...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

Great! Thanks for the help. As for the check valve, does it have any effect on maintaining a higher water level in the filter basin? If there is no reason for it to be there I will definitely be removing it AND this would save me the ~$50 for a nicer valve also!

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

Installing Hayward Max-Flo VS Merged by moderator. Please keep related questions together. Thanks, jblizzle I just purchased the Hayward Max-Flo VS SP2302VSP. This pump is replacing my existing Pentair Whisperflo. A few quick questions before I begin: 1) How do I mount the pump to the base...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

Thank you! I don't want to be penny-wise and pound-foolish regarding the "perfect" pump. I do think I am misreading the efficiency spreadsheet slightly as it appears all the VS pumps just have different operating RPMs where they are most efficient. What is the life-expectancy of an impeller...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

When I used the Pool Pump Tools spreadsheet I was blown away that all pumps were not created equally when it came to energy savings. Specifically the Hayward I mentioned about has a 21 g/whr Energy Factor that was nearly unparalleled when operating at lower RPMs. Am I overvaluing that data...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

I agree! Tier 4 for me was actually $0.34 this month, where all of that $119 was spent! But if I try to save money by simply replacing the motor, where could I purchase a very energy efficient variable or two speed? From the Hyd 101 spreadsheet it appears pool pumps are not all created equally.

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

I do not recall if I replaced the shaft seal or not. It has been several years now... I will say that when I replaced the motor the difference was night and day and the new pump/impeller combo was VERY quite. I was attracted to the Hayward pump because it looked exceptionally energy efficient...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

Wow, thanks for so many replies so quickly! I updated my signature and will continue to improve it. Thank you! Jason: Thanks! I just read about different check valves in the Hyd 101 section. I have a "Flo-Check" 90* valve right now (Pentair I believe?) that prevents backflow when the pump is...

    Replacing Single Speed Pentair

I am writing looking for some help in transitioning my pool off of its single speed Pentair pump. Stats for my pool are: 23,000 gallon pool, Pentair pump with aftermarket 1 HP & 1.65 SF, Clean and Clear Plus 320 cartridge filter (320 sq ft, 6 hr turnover of 43,200 gallons) 2" PVC piping...
