    Black algae species

Yep, my experience with Cyanobacteria (in fish tanks) is that it wipes off very easily but comes back incredibly quickly.

    Black algae species

There are different variants of Audouinella I believe, there is a form that doesn't have hairlike filaments but grows "flatter". A good test would be to get some and put it in Hydrogen Peroxide, it should then turn pink, then white, then die. This stuff prefers a 5ppm - 20ppm CO2 environment I...

Black Algae in Salt Water Pool

Solid chlorine chemicals (regular granulated chlorine) would that be ok on a paler coloured pebblecrete finish?

    Black algae species

Are we sure that black algae is Cyanobacteria? It's strikes me as having characteristics more similar to Audouinella. Cyanobacteria should be able to be nuked easily by chlorine or (expensively, not practical of course) via antibiotics. Thoughts?

Black Algae in Salt Water Pool

I think multiple references are wrong. :-) Interestingly, I read that copper treatment is effective against pool black spot - this is also consistent with the algae species I mentioned above which can also be treated with copper effectively. Although surely adding copper to a pool would create...

    General SWG questions

Hi. Ok, I think I understand. I'm actually troubleshooting a problem where my meter is 100% in one direction but only 75% in the other. I was thinking the four SCRs are in a full wave controlled bridge rectifier configuration and therefore couldn't see how a faulty scr could cause this...

    General SWG questions

Thanks guys. Bgpbucko - so the output knob is controlling the scr gate voltage? My understanding of why an SCR is used in the first place is so that there is a means of controlling at what point the anode/cathode current may pass. So we're basically controlling the duty cycle? The chlorinator...

    Salinity meter imbalance

I found this if it helps: http://www.crystalclearaus.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/RP_EC_Manual.pdf (There is a parts diagram near the end)

    It's a CrystalClear RP3000 SC.

    General SWG questions

Answers would no doubt be in the many other posts but I'm not having much luck finding exactly what I want to know... Some questions... 1. The chlorinator output control knob - is this just a variable resistor? Cranking this to max lowers the resistance thus increasing the current through...

    Salinity meter imbalance

Hi. It's the power supply not the cell. What would cause it to have a higher output in one current direction than the other? Could this be a problem with the bridge rectifier, which would possibly be an inexpensive fix?

    Salinity meter imbalance

Hi, I have an Onga RP3000SC chlorinator. The chlorinator, due to it's self cleaning facility, reverses the polarity every 4 hours (on the hard water setting which I have it set to, 6 hourly on the soft water setting). The output meter reads 100% on the right hand side, but, when it flicks to...

    Storage of pool cleaner

Thanks guys. So it sounds like it's fine to keep the cleaner out of the pool when not in use so long as it's not sitting in the sun somewhere?

    Storage of pool cleaner

I normally keep our Baracuda (Genie 3000) in the pool all the time. I'm thinking I might put it in the box where all my pool equipment is stored, and just put it in the pool when I use it. So, in the storage box, it would be out of the direct sun, but I would need to coil the hose a little to...

Saltwater chlorinator timer intermittently not providing power

Cheers. I wonder if it's possible to remove the face of the timer without too much drama? Has anybody done this?

Saltwater chlorinator timer intermittently not providing power

Hi, My wife and I have an “Onga RP3000SC” as our saltwater cholorinator. It is currently set to run 8am – 10am and 2pm – 6pm. Yesterday I noticed that it was 9am and I could not here anything running. I went out and had a look at the chlorinator and the timer dial was correctly showing 9am...

    Some general Bicarbonate/CO2 related questions

Thanks guys. So that aqueous CO2 to carbonic acid ratio, that is fixed for a certain temperature, pressure correct? If I understand correctly, there are also ratios for the carbonic acid, bicarbonate and carbonate as well, and these ratios shift with pH? Can I have the CO2 bringing the pH...

    Some general Bicarbonate/CO2 related questions

Hi, I have some general questions (and more to come depending on the answers to my first "batch")... :-) A glass of pure water (pH 7), sitting on the kitchen bench, aerated. My understanding is that small amount of CO2 will dissolve in the water... CO2 + H20 = H2CO3 (Carbonic Acid). So the...

    Murky pool after rain

I feel a little bit guilty complaining about the cyclone washing dirt into my pool whilst others have had the roof of their house ripped off etc....

    Murky pool after rain

Yeah, I'll try to get rid of it Saturday morning. Hopefully we can swim in it over the weekend. :-) Based on my CYA levels, the FC is more than fine (slightly too high).

    Murky pool after rain

Yep - Cyclone Marcia is responsible for making my pool murky!!! Everything else at home is fine, but boy did all that rain make a mess of our pool! Looking at it yesterday afternoon, it look like a layer of gunk is settling on the bottom, so, I'll try vacuuming it on Saturday morning. Can...

    Murky pool after rain

Yeah that's right about Februrary!!! It hasn't been that hot up in Brizzy! Temps in the high 20's, rainy etc. FC is fine, there is plenty. Perhaps I'll give it until the weekend and see where it's at; I may need to vac some of the settlement out. The pool is otherwise safe to swim in...

    Murky pool after rain

Hi, I don't have my test results on hand...is there anything specific that could be contributing to the problem? So the DE in the filter trick helps? How is this different to letting the sand filter build up with dirt? Also, whether the DE makes the sand able to catch the smaller particles...

    Murky pool after rain

Hi pwrstrk, Thanks for the help. Perhaps my expectations of how long the filter should take to clear the water are too high.... I can only just see the bottom at the deep end, which is 1.8m deep. The filter has been running for 3 days, at 12 hours per day, so about 36 hours so far. Should I...

    Murky pool after rain

Hi. 40,000 litre pebblecrete concrete pool, sand filtered, swg, was nice and clean... Then it poured down rain washing dirt and clay silt into the pool. So a project over winter is for me to work on the drainage around the gardens and pool. I have added salt to the pool, have got the chlorine...

    Total Alkalinity

Cheers guys really appreciate the help. The final thing Im taking away from this - because I am using CYA - is that it's still a good idea to set the pH to mid 7's for swimmer comfort? And to help keep it here a TA around 60 is best...? Any idea of a good CYA test kit available in Australia...

    Total Alkalinity

Cheers Jason. That detail about CYA - so the fact that the CYA makes the ratio close to constant is why you need to have more Free Cholorine (i.e. to get the hypochlorous acid levels up)? The CYA 'overrides' the pH somewhat in terms of this ratio?
