    Here's one for you...cya disappeared.

Hi, We had 5 inches of rain the other day and my pool was flooded with water that came from my neighbors yard. I balanced it the next day and noticed the chlorine for the next few days was disappearing quickly. I also noticed my cya was dropping. After 4 days it has dropped from 40 to 10 and...

Question about Taylor K-2006 kit and pH testing

I can never tell if it's between 7.6 and 8.0 or even higher. If I put in enough to bring it from 8.0 to 7.5 and it's really at 7.6 or 7.8, then I have a bit of a problem, plus I'm lowering my TA unnecessarily. I've worked it out now, so it's quick and easy. If it's 7.6 or above, I start adding...

Serious thought out question about monopersulfate...

Thanks swampwoman. I always appreciate input. Not that I consider your friends incident a mystery to be solved, but I immediately wonder what size mineral pack they used relative to pool size and if they used any additional sources of copper. Maybe an algaecide or something. I've used two...

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Sometimes I seem obstinate, but I'm really just curious and dogged at getting an answer I can understand within my limits.

Question about Taylor K-2006 kit and pH testing

because I really didn't know what the percentage of sulfuric acid was in the R-0005 ( backed in to a 1% solution) I tried mixing 3 parts water with 1 part R-0005. I figured that would put me at a good starting point. As fate would have it my pH was reasonable this morning and I could pretty much...

Question about Taylor K-2006 kit and pH testing

Thanks Chemgeek. I'm going to try your Pool Equations spread sheet. I pretty much came up with a similar set of numbers (i had 9.2 oz of muriatic acid). What threw me was Taylor's listing on the reagent R-0005 as >5%. I then looked at the MSDS sheet and it said from .1 to 5% sulfuric acid...

Question about Taylor K-2006 kit and pH testing

you would think that if you were dealing with a sane person :-) I'm actually just trying to back in to my pH number because I can't read the comparator above 7.4. I normally like to keep my pH at 7.5 and I have no way of telling if it is 7.5 if it's around 7.6 or up. I guess I could run the...

Question about Taylor K-2006 kit and pH testing

I think I'm getting there. Using Taylor's chart for 31.45% Muriatic acid, I looked at the demand for 1 drop of reagent at 20,000 gallons and it came up with 18.4oz of acid. I multiplied the result by .9 since my pool is only 18,000 gallons and that came to 16.5oz. I then used the Pool Calculator...

Question about Taylor K-2006 kit and pH testing

Thanks tim5055. I'm trying to back in to the numbers using Taylor's acid demand charts, but I don't trust myself that much, so it would be nice to have someone confirm any findings I make. Howard

Thanks cowboycasey. I've been doing a little reading on this site about SWG. Sounds interesting and I'll keep it in the back of my head. Thanks again, Howard

Question about Taylor K-2006 kit and pH testing

I mentioned in another thread that I use a Hanna HI-98128 pH meter, but always use the Taylor K-2006 kit to double check it. I know I'm doing it twice, but I have a reason. One, is I like the second decimal place readout of the Hanna. It doesn't make any difference except I can kind of watch...

Serious thought out question about monopersulfate...

Thanks Chemgeek and Ping. Being in Maryland I do have to drain 1/3 of my water every fall. Actually, it's closer to 5,000 gallons than 6,000, but it's close. About the only time I don't use a solar cover is in August. As fate would have it, it's only 63 degrees today in my neck of the woods...

Serious thought out question about monopersulfate...

Thanks pooldv, I do use a deox reagent when testing my chlorline levels. I used to measure the level of the MPS as chlorine and found that after 2 days, the deox wasn't necessary any longer. Generally, I don't have an issue with CC either way. For me I would welcome the drop in pH. That was...

Serious thought out question about monopersulfate...

At least I think I've thought this out. During a discussion yesterday in another thread, I mentioned I use a mineral pack. I've used one for 13 years and this year decided to make a run without it. In conjunction with it, I used monopersulfate. My wife is a bookkeeper through and through, so as...

    pH rises .1-.2 daily

Hi Dan. Yes, I have figured it out. I'm retired and have little else to do :-) Luckily for me my wife keeps track of every cent we spend and I had her run a report for last year out of quick books. I decided to go back to the mineral pack this year because using last years numbers for bleach...

    pH rises .1-.2 daily

Sounds like a plan. Back when the pool was built they tried a new finish called sider, which was a cementuous mix, with no lime in it. However, the contractor had never used it and assumed it needed lime in the mix. When we opened the pool for the second season, the finish had fallen off. We...

    pH rises .1-.2 daily

Thanks Dan. I'm not sure what a lot of money is, but last year I spent $992 for everything inclusive of chems, testing kit, new o-rings and seals throughout, one pump rebuild and replacement pH meter. No problems with algae or clarity. Other than the mineral pack, I do use the Pool Calculator...

    pH rises .1-.2 daily

Thanks Chem Geek No piles on the bottom. There are a few very thin traces on a few tiles. It's really hard to tell on the side of my pool because it was originally black and has faded, but I don't see or feel anything that resembles drops. Just what looks like a little calcium on a few tiles...

    pH rises .1-.2 daily

Thanks Dan, Actually, i used pH increaser only back when it was low. I have no issue with the mineral pack in that it does relieve the load on the chlorine a little and my pool is black inside, so staining isn't much of a problem for me. My TA isn't high when you add in the cya. The AlkC is...

    pH rises .1-.2 daily

:-) I knew I forgot something. I use the Taylor K-2006 kit and additionally I use the Hannah HI-98128. I always use both for pH measurements because I don't trust the digital tester. My reagents are new this season and I calibrate the Hannah meter bi-weekly. It's stored in the storage fluid...

    pH rises .1-.2 daily

Hi, I'm hoping to maybe get some help figuring out why lately my pH increases almost daily. I'm attaching my measurements in pdf format. This is almost everything I track. I do use a mineral pack because I've found it seems to take some of the work off of the chlorine. I definitely have less...

Ph rose from 7.47 to 7.95 in one day

Thank you Chem Geek. I appreciate it very much. I can be wrong much of the time, but I won't learn anything unless I know the why. Also, I can't pass information along if all I know is "don't touch that snake". Sometimes they are so pretty :-)

Ph rose from 7.47 to 7.95 in one day

Thank you Chemgeek. You've pointed me to some places I can do some reading and that makes me happy. I also did a little more research and answered my own question about algae, specifically blue-green, and rises in pH. The article I read stated that BG algae can cause an increase in pH up to...

Ph rose from 7.47 to 7.95 in one day

Thanks swampwoman. Yesterday I added 242 oz of bleach which brought my FC to 10.8 this morning. I'll check it a little later and try to follow the SLAM guideline. On 9/4 I added 40oz of pH decrease to get it down from 7.95. On 9/5 it was 7.56. Today, 9/6/14, it is 7.97. And, please read how I...

Ph rose from 7.47 to 7.95 in one day

WJR, I'm pretty certain that all of the mineral systems have chlorine feeders. I know my original Frog system had one and the current Nature2 does. I quit using the feeders because you really can't control the amount of chlorine that goes in since it is always eroding the tablet and the demand...

Ph rose from 7.47 to 7.95 in one day

I always test before adding any chemicals. Always around the same time of day. My daughter has used the pool for half of her life and she is a blonde. Never noticed any tint to her hair. FC was 3.6 on the day in question. CC was .1 or .2. Robbie questioned my pH measurement, but I'm not...
