Pool Company Recommendations Chicago Northwest Suburbs?

Can anyone recommend a pool company for opening/closing for an inground pool in the Chicago Northwest Suburbs? We have previously used Quantus Pools and they are absolutely the most pathetically-run small business to have ever existed.

Opening our new to us pool for the first time! Unveil the swamp!

Menards up here sells 12.5% for 3.99 per gallon and they're often on sell for 2.99. Sometimes they go on sell for 1.99 per gallon (and I buy like 24 of them lol). That's the best I've seen (although I'm too lazy to look much lol).

Opening our new to us pool for the first time! Unveil the swamp!

That is how mine works. We don't even have an option to turn off the spillover unless I went and turned the valve manually (wish I did...need to find out how to reprogram the JVAs/AquaLink for that). Our pool has an autocover so I actually dislike the spillover since it carries debris the...

Opening our new to us pool for the first time! Unveil the swamp!

Too true...their prices are pretty ridiculous. Most of the pool services around here seem to be overpriced and terribly-managed. The spa jets you can buy online...they're just self-contained plastic pieces that screw in. Measure across the openings to get the size. I've replaced several...

Opening our new to us pool for the first time! Unveil the swamp!

Amazing results! This has been a very cool thread for me because our pools are very similar. It was most likely built by Barrington Pools (that blue sea horse on the stairs is their logo...I recognized it immediately as mine is the same). They probably have records about the original...

Received estimates to repair 20'x40' foot, 50 year old concrete pool. Advice needed.

Don't assume that removing the pool is cheap...it can be very expensive depending on local codes. Some areas let you just demo it into a pile set down in the hole and fill it up with dirt, but others will require some or even all of the material to be removed. It is not necessarily a cheap...

TFPC is Actually Kind of Boring...

That is pretty similar to my sister-in-law...her response when I made some tiny comment is "oh so you work at a pool store now huh?" Whatever...not my money. My bro says they use these packs of chlorine (containing trichlor) and I ran the numbers and they are paying 4 times as much for...

Out of pure curiosity, what are his/her reasons behind their refusal? Just stubbornness?

    CYA overdose?

A few things... First, you may have simply gotten a CYA-heavy sample because it is not fully dissolved and distributed...especially if you took the water sample from near the return it is hanging on. Second, this is why it is common advice not to do major changes in one pass; you probably should...

    TA and pH

The general rule is "If your PH is consistently high, then lower your TA. If your PH is consistently low, then raise your TA." Do you have a lot of sources of aeration that could be causing the PH increase? Any spillovers, fountains, waterfalls, etc?

    Bubbles After Splashing

Before a recent drain/fill of over 2/3 of my water, nothing you could do would make bubbles...the pool had CH around 700. My dad even commented how it "doesn't foam" like the pool we had as a kid. With new water our level is around 325 and we have the bubbles again. Kids like bubbles so...

    No more stabilizer....

As already pointed out, you can update the title by editing the first post...but also yes, even if it's unrelated it's ok to ask in the same thread that was your thread...the history is very helpful to those trying to help. They'll notice because it will have new unread messages and will pop...

Is is safe to leave the pool at shock level until it's cold enough to close i?

In DFW does it get "cold enough" to close it? I mean you could just winterize it and close it at anytime if you wanted. I think the cost of maintaining SLAM level for months until its cold in Texas would be a far bigger concern than the safety. If you have active algae waiting to take over...

Out with the pool store in with the intent heros?

+1 This thread needs a progress pic after that "before" pic of a true swamp.

    No more stabilizer....

Your signature says the pool installed 7/11....so we're guessing it is indeed fresh new water. As an alternative to using actual stabilizer/conditioner/whatever, you could just add chlorine via dichlor which is commonly sold as "shock" chlorinating granules. With a CYA of 0 if none has been...

Unexplained FC Consumption - SOLVED - although the Mystery Remains

Re: Unexplained FC Consumption (updated title) I've seen this mentioned a couple of times in this thread...where does this theory come from? I've not seen it elsewhere. It seems like if very high FC levels were capable of "burning CYA" to lower the CYA level, that would be a very...

    Suspended particles in water

Some things to try... First, use the skimmer socks or knee highs on skimmers...good at catching really fine stuff like fine sand. Second, if the stuff settles with the filter off...let it do that then vacuum to waste.

    TF-100 test kit question....FAS/DPD test

On the topic of drop size, one thing I rarely see mentioned here is the advice to hold the droppers vertically and be consistent with your technique. Some people will hold the droppers at an almost-horizontal angle and a much larger drop forms against the top via cohesion....then later when the...

This pool owner is getting VERY frustrated!

You need to post the actual test results and tell us how you got them. If they are based on strips or pool store testing they may be very inaccurate. Also your definitions of "correct" may be misguided by pool stores and chemical marketing. To be perfectly honest, your levels cannot be correct...

CYA out of control...among other things

Temperatures also been low here which I think helps. That was basically my conclusion as well that I must just be getting lucky. I knew at that CYA level if I did have a breakout, it would be a true disaster and very difficult to fix. I also read some of The Deep End stuff about how algae may...

Think I want a Stenner but which one?

That tends to be true...although I think plenty of people use the variable ones and don't run them at full...but running them at full is supposedly better for them and doesn't have the clicking sound. IMHO, if you're going to run it at full anyway, just get a non-adjustable one and control it...

CYA out of control...among other things

Yea it was a bit annoying to pay so much to replace "perfectly good" water. My wife wasn't super happy about it at first, but now that she sees how super clear it is even compared to before, she's excited about it. Ours was just very lazily maintained by the previous owner who had been wanting...

CYA out of control...among other things

Just wanted to finalize my own thread...with the brushing, skimmer socks, and Polaris, we were able to get the water clear super fast. It's now beautiful and my wife has agree it looks amazing (hopefully she'll be even more impressed when I add the borates with the boric acid I already have...

sudden rough build up on spa

Is it actually a scum? Can you brush it away and reveal smooth clean surface beneath? If the PH was really 5.0, that's pretty low and potentially could have damaged the surface depending on how long it was at that level. Since you said, "Ph meter" and most tests can't read PH even close...

    Pool Store BS-ing Me?

All chlorine adds salt...liquid, cal-hypo, lithium-hypo, trichlor, dichlor...whatever....they all add salt. It seems that's just something they try to tell people to get them to buy stuff like the pucks which they can make more money on (especially when the downsides get out of control and...

Newbie here. Never owned a pool before....

It doesn't look like you need any advice. You're right on track! Do the tests when the pool is full (there are videos of how to do them if you're unsure) and post the results. Welcome to TFP! In the meanwhile, you can read up on the various articles on Pool School while waiting for it to...

Can i let kids swim in pool at shock level

Yes, it is safe to swim at shock level. You are already clear, 0 CC, and passed the OCLT so you are done slamming and letting it drift down...it's already below shock level so safe and getting better all the time. Well done on whipping your pool back into shape so get in there and enjoy!

Don't trust Salt Strip Testers - Use the Taylor drop test

Is your salt for feel? What level do you target that you want 80ppm resolution? I seem to remember that around 2000ppm was recommended when using salt just for feel, and surely ~10% resolution is sufficient enough for salt for feel?

    I'm Finished

I think you just scared them because you said "I got 5 gallons". A lot of people are used to the pool store method of "I bought X and put it in the pool", but you were just (correctly) getting a lot because you knew you'd need more and could get a good price. Nothing wrong with that. I mean I...
