    Blown heat pump...major oil slick

We have a titanium heat exchanger. I read through the manufacturers warranty and it doesn't mention water chemistry so we're ok there. I have disconnected the unit from the rest of the plumbing and replacement is scheduled for sometime next week. Thanks everyone for you replies and suggestions.

    Blown heat pump...major oil slick

Hello everyone! My Perfectemp electric heat pump just blew the other day and dumped it's oil into our pool. I have contacted the manufacturer and they have agreed to replace the unit as it is still under warranty. In the mean time, I have a major mess on my hands. I understand that the oil is...

During the long hot summer is it better to drain the solar panels or leave the water in them?

    Phosphates and cloudy water

Because of what phosphate removers can do to the water! Make it even cloudier! If you sell to pool owners (with cloudy water), a product that makes their water even cloudier (even if it's only temporary) they are going think you are crazy and go somewhere else to get their water tested. And no...

    Phosphates and cloudy water

Thank you all for your responses and support. I had told the customer that his cloudy water was most likely caused by a nascent algae bloom due to his water test showing FC = 0 and a PH = 8.0 or higher. All other readings were normal. My colleague has no authority to tell me how to do my job...

    Phosphates and cloudy water

Thanks duraleigh, for your response, none the less. I'm posting this because of what happened in our pool store today. I was testing a customers' water who was complaining that it was cloudy. I was told by a colleague to test his phosphates. I replied that I was not concerned about that. He...

    Phosphates and cloudy water

Can phosphates alone cause cloudy pool water? If so, under what circumstances does that occur? Not counting the use of phosphate removers. "Phosphates are excellent plant fertilisers. They do no detectable harm in humans (in fact, phosphorus is an essential element for all known life). However...

    Aqua Ammonia

Exactly, but I read somewhere that algae mistakes the monochloramine for food and consumes it. In the process, the compound breaks down into it's constituent chlorine and then the chlorine is what actually kills the algae. Can't remember where I read that though. Any more thoughts or evidence.

Have searched everywhere and cannot find any evidence that Aqua Ammonia (alone) kills algae. Anyone have any experience or knowledge about this?

Best time to add algaecide, day or night?

Ok, let me rephrase the question. When is algae most vulnerable to be killed? by whatever means. Day or night? Or does it matter at all? I've heard some say it is best to catch it in the day when it's in full bloom. Others say at night when it's more dormant. What is their reasoning?

Best time to add algaecide, day or night?

I say during the day as that is when it's blooming, but does the scientific data back that up?

When will adding calcium cause cloudiness?

So is it safe to say then that elevated PH, Alkalinity, and CYA are more likely to result in cloudy water when CH is added than if those numbers are lower? Are you more likely to see cloudiness when you add chemicals that raise these numbers, on the same day you are adding CH? and less likely to...

When will adding calcium cause cloudiness?

Need to know what water conditions are most likely to result in cloudiness when adding hardness and why. I would like to be able to predict the occurance so it can be avoided. Any thoughts?

Adding CYA to the skimmer, or not

Wow! I expected some possible flack for my statements but not the written thrashing I have received here. Look, first of all I am not trying to scare anyone and the very last thing I want to do is pass on misinformation to anyone. As I have said in an unrelated post I am the eternal...

Adding CYA to the skimmer, or not

Re: Increasing CH and CYA, which order and best application Hi all. I am an employee at a Pinch A Penny store in central Florida. We are trained to never add granular chemicals of any kind directly to the skimmer. Also to never add any acidic or corrosive liquid chemical there either. All...

Adding CYA to the skimmer, or not

Re: Increasing CH and CYA, which order and best application I respectfully disagree. And I forgot to mention that dumping it directly into the skimmer like that can also damage your pump.

Adding CYA to the skimmer, or not

Split off of Increasing CH and CYA, which order and best application. JasonLion I would reccomend putting the CYA in a filter sock, used panty hose, or something similar and place the contents in your skimmer basket. It takes time to dissolve. Pouring it directly into the skimmer and allowing...

    Questions about Chlorine and CYA

Thanks Jason. What you said confused me until I googled "chemical equillibrium". It exists when their is no CHANGE in the rate of activity or the concentration of chemicals in solution. Therefore, when hypochlorous acid is reduced drastically (as when it comes in contact with an algae bloom)...

Will green swamp condition ruin a cartridge filter?

That's what I figure too, Jason. Maybe if the algae was so thick you could walk across the pool on it, but then I would recommend pumping it out and starting over rather than trying to filter it out. These guys are telling customers to toss their filters after cleaning up a cloudy green pool...

Will green swamp condition ruin a cartridge filter?

Yes, but can you ruin it in the course of cleaning up a single algae bloom?
  24. E

    Questions about Chlorine and CYA

So let me see if I have this straight. If the hypochlorous acid on the right of the equation is reduced then that upsets the equillibrium and then as a result hypochlorous acid attached to CYA on the left of the equation is released in the amount necessary to reach equillibrium again. The...

    Solar cover, clear or no.

Solar blankets are not designed to heat the pool. Only to keep existing heat in. And at that they work very well by the way. Just started using one with our new heat pump. Mine has a fairly dark blue lining. My CYA is very low but my FC is quite high so it seems to be helping to hold the cl. I...

Will green swamp condition ruin a cartridge filter?

My more experienced colleagues at the pool store say that a bad algae bloom will ruin the element, even a new one. I suppose it's possible but, being the eternal skeptic, I'm not convinced. What say you?

That's perfect Richard. Exactly what I was looking for. :goodjob: I may have some more related questions as I mull this information over. Right now I have to get ready for work, but I'll go to work with a much better understanding of what I'm doing, thanks to you.

    Questions about Chlorine and CYA

Well then, what is the correct percentage? How does it know when some of the chlorine is used up and when it has reached the correct percentage? I'm not sure I buy that explanation yet. The reason I'm asking is because I work in a  Pool Store  as a water test technician and am...
