New Hayward max-flo vs installed, will not prime

Ok, just to close out...happily it appears the problem was the filter pressure gage. Since it was tightened, no problem and the basket fills up more as well.

New Hayward max-flo vs installed, will not prime

Yes, I hope that does it too. I'll post. One more thing, the new pump works great, but the basket (on the pump) doesn't fill up fully. I have 1.5" piping, but never had this problem before and consider it to be a problem. Filter is super clean, just backwashed and cleaned it, and added 1/3...

New Hayward max-flo vs installed, will not prime

Ok, site went down just after I posted.....so here is the update. The pump is just a foot or so above water level. The VSP starts in PRIME mode at 3000rpm. The following day, after this post, I went through and touched up all the pvc joints with my pvc cement and found the problem. (I got...

New Hayward max-flo vs installed, will not prime

Had an old 1/2 hp pump that seized up this past week, so quickly ordered a new Hayward max-flo VS on Amazon. I've been wanted to get a variable speed pump, so was happy to upgrade. (electricity in Hawaii is very expensive). But, I haven't had a pump running for nearly a week. So, installed...

Funny Pump Story - Pump losing prime intermittently

Hawaii pool owner here, in ground, 16,000 gallon pool, beautiful deep blue tile installed about two years ago. Small pump, Sand filter with a little DE power added. Trouble Free Pool has been my bible for pool care for the 2.5 years, when I found the site. I use the TFP app on my iPhone for...

Pump line - air and now dirt

Waste, must have had my time set wrong on my computer. 8) BTW, a long career in the Navy and I never knew anyone with the nickname waste. I thought I had heard them all. Thanks to you and Spishex, I really appreciate the advice. Got it taken care of. I got back in there and cleaned up a...

Pump line - air and now dirt

I guess I could be getting some air in at that point, so I'll do that. I'm just disappointed that I replaced all that and still have a leak. Could it be I didn't clean well enough when removing the old spider gasket? Any advice on this? I'm taking it apart later today.

Pump line - air and now dirt

Well it was still leaking a bit, so I replaced the entire top half of the sp710 and the spider gasket. Wouldn't you know it, when it pump is off, I hear some gurgling. It is very slight, so I'll see if it amounts to much air in the system in the morning. I didn't lube anything though. Could...

Pump line - air and now dirt

Yep, it was pretty gunky in there and I didn't even really clean it out well. I'll tell you it was pretty nice to see my pump kick on this morning and not a single bubble came through the line. I didn't even know that was possible, I know that sounds ridiculous, but I'd never seen it before.

Got it, thanks. Glad to be able to make sense of what seemed to be contradictory.

Alkalinity in a tile pool question

Hello all, I had my pool resurfaced in January from plaster to tile. It's been a learning process these past few months, but I have adopted BBB and am moving boldly into my first Hawaii summer as a pool boy (ahem, pool serviceman). I have a few other posts on this site and believe that TFP...

Pump line - air and now dirt

Thanks. I took it apart today to inspect things and agree that taking apart the handle, etc would be a tough re-assemble. So I have a local pool supply place that can get me the entire top portion of the multi-port valve. This is nice as I won't need to do any pipe work. I'll also replace...

Pump line - air and now dirt

Ok, I ran down through every post I could find about multiport valves and realize I have to pop the top off and take a look at the gasket(s) and look for chips. Will do that next chance I get.

Pump line - air and now dirt

There is standing water around the ball valve (handle) of the multi-port assembly. The whole thing is in a well-ventilated shed, so the water couldn't have come from rain or elsewhere. Since that is where I hear the gurgling when the pump is turn off it's probably my culprit. Do I have to...

Pump line - air and now dirt

Hello all. I'm a bit ignorant as to what is going on, so allow me to describe. When my pump kicks on in the morning, I get quite a bit of air blowing through the line into the pool. I assumed this was normal since the filter and pump are above the waterline. But, it seems worse now as my...

    All tile pool?

I just got my pool tiled in Jan this year. Previous plaster had failed prior to my purchasing the home. Problem where I live in Hawaii is getting a reasonable deal on replastering. I decided to go all tile with stone on the stairs. You definately want to go with some professionals and I have...

Seeking Advice - Starting out fresh with a FAS-DPD Complete

Sure, I'll attach one. Our little piece of paradise. Glad to report that things have gone well. Thank you all for the advice and assurances in this thread. After just two days with a good test kit, I've switched to BBB, added 17 lbs of CH and 8 lbs of Baking Soda... and have my pool very...

Seeking Advice - Starting out fresh with a FAS-DPD Complete

I should have answered you a little better. Yes, the grout is fresh. Like I said in my last post, zits is a perfect description and they do pop from pressure, because they only grow out near the surface, usually at between 1' and 2' from the surface. There is evidence of them on the bottom...

Seeking Advice - Starting out fresh with a FAS-DPD Complete

Gotcha. I'm heading out to COSTCO today to buy some bleach and I'll do my best to swear off all these products (pucks, shock, algaecide) and see how it goes. FYI, I'll try to attach a pic of the white growths. The above post mentioned that they are like zits and that is DEAD ON. The picture...

Yes, I was annoyed though, because with test strips I was thinking I was ideal! And here I was with a CSI of -1.07.

Seeking Advice - Starting out fresh with a FAS-DPD Complete

Thank you all for the replies. I agree that it feels much better to be working on my pool for the first time without being blind, or partially blind. I'll post an update after retest and adjustments. I was under the impression that with high CYA that algecide would help reduce my FC...

Seeking Advice - Starting out fresh with a FAS-DPD Complete

Thank you Spishex and waterbear. I was wondering, and couldn't find anything mentioning something like this. I am hypothesizing that my low CH was "pulling" the calcium out faster. I'll see what the effects of a CH reading of 200 are.

Seeking Advice - Starting out fresh with a FAS-DPD Complete

OK, got my pool resurfaced in January from failing plaster to tile. All Tile. Like an idiot, I started out using test strips and managed my pool as if my CH was high. I also followed the directions on the stabilizer after filling the pool and my CYA was 100 after that. I believed the strips...
