    Upgrading Clearwater C-series SWGs

I'm thinking I will need to replace the electrode. Can I simply use the next bigger electrode on this thing or are the power supplies rated for each cell?

    Green pool, no CC

I've started working on my brother's pool. It sat with no chlorine or filter running for a few days and started turning green. I hit it with shock levels of chlorine and after about 30 minutes I tested for FC and CC and was surprised to find there was no CC. Does it take a while for the FC to...

    How to kill a motor

So one must wonder then....what good is the warranty? How can they exclude scale and rust on a metal object that sits outdoors through all types of weather?

add bleach while SW system comes online?

The guy that did our plaster said the issue with adding salt too early is with staining and brushing every 30 min or so until the salt dissolved would help prevent the stains. I added salt on day 2 after a replaster and didn't get any stains, but as always, YMMV

Should I replace an old sand filter?

My brother's got an old sand filter with the push-pull type backwash valve off to the side (Pentair?). The valve is leaking and won't go all the way up to turn it into the 'locked' position. I'm guessing the tank is probably 20+ years old. Its is made of fiberglass and the surface layer of...

    newbie pool owner first readings

This is what I have been trying but my TA comes right back up with the Ph when I aerate. I'm just using the built in aerator that sprays pool water out over the surface because I don't have a way to connect anything else to any of the plumbing (the returns are flush with the plaster), so maybe...

LaMotte borate strips in Phoenix area?

Yeah, I saw this already. I emailed a few of them and didn't get any positive responses so I thought I would see if anyone here knew of a place before I started calling around.

Anyone know where I can get them?

add bleach while SW system comes online?

I checked 2 different Leslie's and neither had the R-0014. They didn't even have a place for them on the shelf so it wasn't like they happened to be out. I looked in the other test kits they had there and the only one I saw that had the R-0014 was the DPD Deluxe so I figured they didn't carry...

    newbie pool owner first readings

The two are very closely linked. In fact, I haven't been able to raise/lower one without the other moving a proportionally equal amount. I aerate 8 hours a night and my Ph goes up overnight but so does my TA. I add MA and both come down but the next morning they are both right back up to...

add bleach while SW system comes online?

1 gal of acid a week sounds about right. I had mine re-plastered in May and this is about what I'm adding. I try to spread the gallon over two or three adds a week to keep the Ph and TA from getting too high. I have the Leslie's DPD Deluxe test kit (~$35) and managed to keep the pool looking...

add bleach while SW system comes online?

Your CYA is on the low end of the scale for a SWG pool. You might want to add 6-8oz and see where you are in a week. Your ideal level will depend on how much direct sunlight your pool gets. poolcalculator.com recommends 70-80ppm CYA but I run 55-60ppm and my FC stays pretty constant...

Yet another new pool owner... Uh, oh - no suction??!

Re: Yet another new pool owner... I forgot to mention that I like "gadgets" and it's pretty cool to watch the chlorine being extracted from the salt in the water as it flows by. Even if the "cool factor" doesn't offset all of the other drawbacks, I think it's worth something, anyway.

sand/dead algea in bottom of pool?

People have reported safe water at 20ppm. What's not safe is the pathogens that develop when the the water is not properly sanitized. 5ppm may or may not be able to properly sanitize your pool, but you need to look at the whole picture to be sure. CYA, CC and FC.

Yet another new pool owner... Uh, oh - no suction??!

Re: Yet another new pool owner... A few observations for a new owner from someone that's been here for a few months.... First, if the search on this site doesn't give you what you're looking for (i.e. words too short, etc), remember google is your friend. Try this string in the google search...

Trouble keeping Ph and TA down

Yeah, this is the stuff I get because it's the highest % I could find and the best value. I figured the "AZ Formula" was a sales gimmick, but you think they add something to it that's not in the other stuff?

Trouble keeping Ph and TA down

I already ordered one (TF100) and it should be here by the weekend. :) This pool has always been sparkling blue using a basic chlorine/Ph/TA kit but I'm going to start working on my brother's pool which doesn't look so good so I figured it was time to get something more than a basic kit.

Trouble keeping Ph and TA down

It probably wasn't 80 to 400. It was probably more like 120 to 400. I was letting it run a little high just because I was tired of adding so much acid. As far as I know, nothing has been added to the pool. Just people swimming. The last time I took it to the pool store to have it tested (I...

    Run Times: Pump SWG?

Forget about the dial. What are your CYA, FC and CC readings? These readings are the only thing that is going to tell you if you're producing enough chlorine. Edit: Another reason to ignore the numbers on the dial: when the amount of sun hitting your pool changes, you're going to have to...

Trouble keeping Ph and TA down

My target #s are ~80 TA and ~7.2Ph. I'm having to add about 1 gal. of 34% MA a week to keep the Ph/TA at these levels. The pool was re-plastered in May, so I realize this will create a need to use more acid, but two things bother me. First, the amount of acid I'm having to add has not...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

What about something like this? http://www.divers-supply.com/-P447.aspx?afid=12 It looks like I could fold the top over the basket and just use the drawstring to secure it in place. Maybe use a couple zipties over the top lip to keep the bag from rotating inside the basket. For the inlet...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

Ok, good news. I picked up a housing and diffuser gasket and pulled the pump apart to see what was going on. Turns out one of our trees drops these short stem things that look sort of like a small cherry stem. They are small enough to make it past the skimmer basket but long enough to fold...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

Yeah, I'm starting to suspect the impeller/restriction as well, although I disconnected the power leads for the SWG to make sure it wasn't the source of the bubbles. I'm bummed about having to pull this pump apart. It looks like I might be able to separate the motor from the pump housing...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

There is no air in the strainer basket, but there is still air getting into the system. I can see it in the SWG tube, which is after the filter. If I push down a little on the filter selector lever while the pump is running, more air goes rushing through the SWG, which is why I suspected there...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

Ok, so here's the results of my latest round of experiments. I put a piece of plexiglass on the strainer basket and ran it until the water was completely clear (no air at all). This tells me the air is being introduced after the strainer basket. There are two plugs on this pump. One in the...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

The Max Flo has the knobs on the front edge. The RS has them opposite each other in the top center front-to-back. They swing out to the side when you loosen them to remove the lid. The Super II parts list lists 3 different lids - only one says "Tread Style" which seems to be the one pictured...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

Yeah, sure enough. It looks like the Super II, although instead of the screw-on strainer cover mine has two knobs on either side to secure the cover. I'll check on the drain plugs this afternoon. I also had an idea to remove the strainer cover and set a piece of plexi-glass on there so I can...

    Hayward RS-1000, air in plumbing

I've got a 1hp Hayward RS-1000 and there's a lot of air passing through the system. I've got a Clearwater C170 chlorine generator and there's a lot of clear plastic for viewing with this thing. There's quite a bit of air flowing through it in the last couple of weeks and the pressure on the...
