Does anyone know if it is possible to get a false low CYA reading? I just shocked my pool with more dichlor than I thought I needed and my pool is still light green. I did a chlorine test and it reads zero and I did a CYA test and it shows virtually none. My pH is about 7.2. Any ideas?

HOLY COW!! I'm lucky to have pretty good water I guess. My source water Ph is also typically around 7.4.

That answers my question Richard. The slight affect on Ph from the baking soda is the piece that I was missing in my mind. I have my borates at about 30ppm now. Would you recommend closer to 50ppm for borates?

Scenario: My TA is on th low end at 60 and my Ph is 7.8. I add acid to lower my Ph and in so doing I lower TA below 60. I then add Baking Soda to raise the TA which in turn raises Ph which in turn causes me to add acid to lower Ph and thereby lower TA. Doesn't this become a circular??

I was going to add a littel D.E. to my sand filter to help with filtration. I went to my pool store and they sold me Celatom Diatomite. Is diatomite the same as diatomaceous earth? The back of the bag says "amorphous diatomaceous and crystalline silica in varying amounts."

I've been reading that dead algae is hard to remove. Is there any truth to that? If so, will the DE help or is draining and refilling my only option?
