I've read people say to use the Oatey red can All Purpose Cement. On the Oatey site they say this: I don't care about the cure time and no hot water will go through the pipes. I know they're two different kinds of plastics but has anyone used this glue and then the joint leaked?

Leak is from the gray pipe that comes out of the pump, area is circled in red. The gray pipe is threaded, I haven't repaired one of these before. Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm guessing PVC glue wasn't used on those threads but a sealant? And is this a case where I need to cut the pipe...

OK, will keep monitoring. I tested the pH of our tap water and it was 8.2, maybe a tad higher. Guess they dumped in a lot more acid than I thought they would. Everyone says the pH will go up so have plenty of acid, and I've got plenty of it. Just hasn't been opened yet. Thanks for the input.

Sorry, didn't ask above - is there any way for that kind of backwash valve to fail and allow a leak, aside from the o-rings and gaskets?

Good grief - thanks for mentioning that and the overall help here. I got that stuff at Home Depot, do they sell marine/pool lube or is this something found typically at pool stores or online? There's a great pool store not far but HD is closer. Just a laziness question.

Lube is DAP Auto/Marine Sealant 100% RTV silicone.
