    Short in pump motor...where?

Motor and pump sat on bench overnight. Blew compressed air through windings etc. Plugged it in this morning and started right up. Reinstalled and pumping right now. Ordering a new motor in anticipation of the next rain! $133 with free shipping - can't complain about that.

    Short in pump motor...where?

Right now pump/motor are sitting on my bench. Circuit breaker trips instantly when I plug the motor in. Everything sure looks dry in the motor now. Maybe I'll hit the windings with compressed air again and let it dry completely overnight. Motor/pump have been located under my deck on a...

    Short in pump motor...where?

4 year old Sta-Rite JWPA pump with A.O. Smith motor, wired directly to timer output on my chlorine generator control panel. 2 nights ago finally got rain. Circuit breaker (GFIC) for pump tripped when timer turned it on in morning. Isolated short circuit to motor. Took motor apart, looked for...

sand/dirt out of return jets after 10 mins of vacumming

Exact same thing is happening to me as I try to vacuum up the silt and debris that sifted through my mesh cover all winter. My concern is that when I backwash I don't see the same degree of discolored water that I'm used to. I was just about to tear down the filter and look for...

    Winter Closing Question

We also leave the filter outside with multiport on (drain plug off - multiport set to 'winter' which is basically a setting between settings so handle stays elevated). I cover it with a tarp (but it is under our deck anyway). I do bring the pump, salt cell, solar valving inside. Drain the...

Seal Skimmer for winter (best method?)

I used one of those plugs last year. Drained pool to just below skimmer and by the time spring came it had filled nearly to overflowing (mesh-type winter cover). So, mine didn't leak (but I'll find out this year if it will do as well again) but I may have gotten lucky. I'll find out soon.

    Now what?

That looks great. Relax, lie down, forget about the pool for now.

Questions on Deck around AG pool

I'll be curious about the answers to your first question. I built my deck over the top rail and have a beaded liner done-agp-deck-solar-t17243.html I'm hoping that the bead channel holds up for that first liner change (which I hope is some time off). As for the aluminum plate - is that...

drain cap leaking on sand filter

I'm no expert but inside of my cap there is an O ring where the sidewall of the cap meets the top of the cap - it's buried in there. I had a drip because sand was in the threads (check cap and filter threads) and it wasn't screwing in far enough for that O ring to seal completely. You don't...

To all those who have partial or mostly buried AGP.

You may have trouble building the retaining wall first and then asking your installers to snug the pool 4 inches from it. Don't forget the dimensions of the side supports on some pools. Probably a better idea is to cut back deeper into the hill and temporarily retain it so the installers have...

Going BBB - need some help

Good advice so far. Read 'Pool School' link on the upper right corner of the webpage. You'll learn that you need to get a good test kit that will allow you to accurately report CYA, free chlorine and chloramines, and so on. Use one of the pool volume calculators on the web to estimate your...

    First read - starting BBB

The simple answer is drain and refill in stages, testing CYA after each refill, until your CYA reaches your target level. In order to get a precise answer to your question, you'll need to accurately determine your CYA level using the dilution methods suggested earlier (since the CYA 'dot' test...

    Please assure me (Pictures)

X-PertPool, Thanks for that post. I've often wondered whether freeze damage to the returns or skimmer (blocked off as you do) as the ice moves up during expansion in an AGP is really a risk. Or, are you at greater risk for liner damage by draining down and allowing the exposed liner to dry...

Trench around pool desperatly need help

I'd tamp the trench down, grade it gently so it follows the terrain (so water won't stand), and then fill to the surrounding grade with river rock (to prevent erosion under the cove). Kelly

New convert to BBB just lowered CYA & starting fresh

    1. visit pool school link 2. Locate the FC/CYA chart to see your target level of FC for a CYA of 40ish. 3. Use the pool calculator to calculate how much bleach to add to raise your FC to the target level given your pool volume. No need to shock unless you suspect algae. You couldn't...

Installing SWG next week , want to prep pool water now....

to drop the CYA to 60 you'd have to dump half your water (16.5K gal). That would be quickest to achieve with a pump of some type (a transfer pump or submersible pump) or by siphoning if you are patient. If you did it all at once there'd still be plenty of water to keep the liner in place.

Pump Pressure after a Aqua Trol Install

Something is wrong somewhere. A properly installed Aqua Trol shouldn't cause that kind of behavior. Stick around and I'm sure that you will get some expert advice soon.

    Hard Plumbing AG

I'll second the suggestion for liberal use of unions (and putting the filter on a pad) for AG installations in the frozen north.

2" SAND FLOOR OR 2" SAND FLOOR W/ HAPPY BOTTOM PROS VS CONS

Make sure you use mason's sand or other finely screened sand. The happy bottom or similar also helps protect the liner.

Ok, I want to test, but $68?!

There's rather complex chemistry going on in our pools - chemicals are getting consumed, converted, etc. For $68 you can, with good accuracy, measure the levels of a few critically important chemicals and then use the Pool Calculator to determine, with good accuracy, how much of a few chemicals...

    which salt should I use?

I use the cheapest 99.9% pure 'solar' salt that I can find - pellets or coarse - they both dissolve just fine. Don't buy anything with additives for rust, etc.

Pool and Spa Thermometer with wireless Temperature Sensor

Thanks for the tip. The data logger would receive data from the base receiving unit or are there loggers with wireless reception capabilites? Kelly

Pool and Spa Thermometer with wireless Temperature Sensor

I checked with Chaney Instruments (Lake Geneva, WI), who owns/distributes Accu-Rite. This unit is exclusive to Home Depot (HD) and doesn't appear on-line with HD, so you have to go to a brick-and-mortar HD store. In Cedar Rapids, IA I discovered that they don't carry it, have no plans to order...

Solar cover and Reel for Above Ground with Deck surrounding

My pool is oval. I bought a reel (aluminum tubes) intended for an IGP, with large wheels on one end. Since mine is oval I just leave the reel on one end, near the fence. Mine is 17+ wide and I'm happy I just have to push it back a few feet (I reel/unreel with it a few feet over one end so...

Chlorine-Free...has anyone heard of E-Z Pool?

Why can't you open your eyes in a pool using chlorine as a sanitizer? If you are talking about a pool that smells like chlorine then I understand. I don't swim in those because that's a pool with a problem (either a problem that is developing, or a problem that the owner is in the process of...
